Bid retraction

Hi all. I'm a first time poster and hope someone can help. It's the usual story - been browsing the site for ages and secretly picking the brains of so many people but now I need something a little more specific. I am bidding on an item at the moment which suddenly got very popular with one particualr bidder. I placed a bid of £100 which left me as top bidder. However, within minutes a first time ebayer (0 feedback) suddenly outbid me. When I went back in to re-bid it appeared that the newbie had bid right up to £280 (the item is possibly worth £300 but still has over a day left). Anyway two hours later I get emailed saying that the highest bidder has retracted all of his bids leaving me as top bidder on £102 but with a standing top bid of £275! Is there any way I can retract my higher bids without breaking ebay rules? What makes it worse is I think the new bidder was a pal of the seller who was only bidding to get the price up. Any thoughts much appreciated.

In a word no you can retract your bid and enter a new high amount tho I have only done that when I bid £300.00 for something £3.00

If that happened to me I would insist on all my higher bids being retracted and would only pay the price needed to outbid all the other remaining bidders in the auction.
- If I were you I would contact the seller and just see if he agrees to that.

Yes you can, no need and there is no need to contact the seller.
Just retract your entire bid for the reason 'bid wrong amount' then immediately rebid the amount you want to bid.
If you do put in a much lower amount be prepared to lose the item though as most bids don't go in to the last few minutes and if you believe it is worth £300 then others might do as well.
As for the retracted bid, if this buyer has a habit of bidding on this sellers items then it could be a shill bid. If there is any evidence then just report the two ids to ebay and they will investigate.

If I was the seller I would report such an email to ebay for fee avoidance and auction interference. If the OP believes that shill bidding has occured then he should retract alll bids, report the two ids and walk away. If anything on an auction feels wrong, or makes you nervous then walk away, don't try and bargain with the seller.
Also of course, now that the newbie bid has been withdrawn the OP will only be paying the price needed to outbid all the remaining bidders on the auction anyway, so I don't quite see what is being suggested here.

the high bid doesn't seem to drop down to the next high bid, there has been mention, on here before where
Start price £50
I bid £100
'0' feedback poster bid £250
pushing my bid to £100
and them having the high bid at £250
then retracted the amount, leaving me as high bid of £100
not just £50
I hope I have made sense there Soo??!!
But I would agree with Soo and retract and walk!!!

Looks to me like a scam to push you to your maximum bid.
I'm always wary of 'Second Chance' offers for the same reason.

yep just retract your bids, could be dodgy bidding or it could be the newbie has got the item from elsewhere cheaper so removed their bid or decided to bid at the last minute like everyone else.

I've just tried to retract the bid only to be told that becasue the auction is now in it's last 12 hours I am not allowed. I have emailed the seller twice but had no reply. Any further suggestions other than just to ride it out and hope for the best.0

How close to the 12-hour limit did the previous high bidder retract their bid?
My guess is 12 hours and 1 minute!

First things first.... Investigate the bidder who has retracted bids.
Enter their ID in here and make sure you tick the completed listings box.

Are they in the habit of bidding on this sellers auctions? Or retracting bids?
Then check out the seller..... Enter their ID in here and make sure you tick the completed listings box. Look at their completed auctins, bids, and bid retractions.

I know it is a little after the event (bidding), but if you don't like what you see, you can then make choices. The MSE Dictionary
