Engine noise - Vauxhall Astra 1.6
My car, a Vauxhall Astra club 1.6, is making a loud noise. It basically started after I did a full service. I hardly drive long distances and have only done 2000 miles during the year. I thought it was the oil after reading from the different forums. I took the car to Halford and they changed the oil but no luck. A friend of mine told me it's the tappet. Can you suggest something? The noise is driving me insane. Check the video on the 3rd post.
Your suggestion will be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of changing the oil to 0w-40 as suggested by many oil manufacturers.

Perhaps if you Google Youtube you will find a similar or same noise?

You did a full service, then you had the oil changed by Halfords? Didn't you change the oil when you did the full service? Might help if you clarified that.
I've found your video

Sounds like it could be a tappet to me (would expect a main or big end to be louder / more of a thump than a tap). Time to get the feeler gauges out to check.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Thanks. I did a full service in June 2018 where the oil was changed. I thought maybe they've used the wrong oil that's why the tappet was noisy. So I had it changed at Halford again last Monday but the noise has not gone away.
Thanks for posting the video.0 -
It does sound like a Lifter lash to me (tappets). They can be replaced without removing the cam and head if memory serves but you need to make valve compression homemade tool so you can sneak the lifter out.

It will tap like this forever if your not bothered with repairing it. If you do repair it they all need changing not just the one, so that wear is equal over all the lifters. Remember if do buy some new ones, you must soak them in your engines grade oil for 24hrs so they aren't fitted "dry".0 -
Thanks. I'm planning to take it to a garage this weekend. Do you have an idea of how much I am looking to replace or repair? The car is a very nice car and have only 57 000 miles on the clock.0

Well knackered hydraulic tappet if you're lucky, sticking valve if you're not. Either way it needs sorting before you damage the camshaft.. Good news if it is a tappet is tappets are cheap to buy and don't take long to fit. If you're planning on keeping the car I'd do the lot. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I've dropped the car at Vauxhall today for a check up. I'll keep you updated.0
