There I am, trundling along in my 4x4 (on winter tyres :D) at a nice steady 33 on the speedo (pretty much exactly 31) in a 30 limit when some Toyota tries to overtake.

As he/she couldn't possibly make it at the speed he/she was doing without a head-on I dab the brakes and he/she gets in front with barely a flash of lights and a horn from the oncoming car.

200yds later we stop at the lights, and on green, he/she sets off like a milk float on its way back to the dairy, holding me up. Then as we get near 30 he/she starts braking for oncoming cars on the other side of the road, and 1/4 mile later, makes me wait 2 minutes while he/she turns off right.

What was the point? apart from making my day just that tiny bit more miserable than it was already?

I don't care if someone wants to go faster, they can pass me on the inside with a wheel on the pavement, go round the other side of a KEEP LEFT island, overtake me when I stop for a red light (seen them all) whatever, as long as they don't get in my way. Not letting it past would likely have got me sideswiped.

I mentioned it to a Land Rover driving colleague, and he said he quite often trundles along at 50 in a 60 limit and some car will (usually) dangerously pass him, only to slow to 45 as soon as they are in front. It has taken him about 10 minutes to get to 50 as it is, then half an hour later they are still holding him up, and he would have been 2 miles away in front if they hadn't overtaken.

He reckons they just have to overtake the slow landrover, so it doesn't hold them up.

Same as the wally in an old Merc the other day.

2 lanes that opens upto 3 lanes, lorry in front of me where the left lane (left turn only) starts to open. I couldnt get past the lorry even if i wanted to.
Yet this wally behind me has got his wheels touching the kerb, maybe he thought this would turn his car into a motorbike?
As i move forward and stay in the now middle lane he goes up the left lane and then his right indicator comes on.

As i get further up the queue he is now in the right hand lane indicating left???
As we exit the roundabout he is in the right hand lane doing 35 in a 40 limit. Enters and exits the next couple of roundabouts slower than a granny thats fallen asleep at the wheel or forgotten to start her engine.

So the whole point of cutting in was to end up behind me where he was in the first place?

Just before this a woman moved from the right hand lane and sat on my rear bumper. Did she not see the massive lorry in front of me?
Was she expecting me to speed up?

  • You were speeding. They were speeding. You're both as bad as each other.

Isn't there a hole for you to (not) find? Perhaps you need another spade? Or some glasses to see traffic coming from more than 50ft away...

    Ahhh!

By reference to their speedo, (which could over-read considerably and indicate 40 possibly), they decided that I was dangerously speeding and overtook me to police the roads and slow me to 30 on their speedo, which could be an absolute speed of 22MPH , and indicate anything above 22 on mine.

Makes sense now, also explains the cars that wont go above 22mph in a 30

(A speedometer must NOT under-read, but can indicate upto 110% of the actual speed + 6.25MPH)

Yep! That was my experience driving a LR, too! Anyone in a side-road that saw a LR coming always underestimated the approach speed and then the cruising speed!

Well as I drive a van for my work, I’m limited to 50mph on a single carriageway, and 60mph on duel carriageways ( unless otherwise indicated) , you should see the numpties I have to deal with on a daily basis...

A phenomenon that I've noticed on our local narrow winding poor visibility country roads is the press-on couriers who tailgate until you get to a 30 limit whereupon they show excessive respect for the limit, dropping down to about the mid 20s. I assume that they've got lots of points on their licences and worry about disqualification more than they do about collisions with big wide farm vehicles on the "open" road.
