Another company, Energy Extra has now ceased trading and OFGEM advice is to sit tight, but in the meantime should you cancel your direct debit? If not who are you paying it to?

Any money paid post failure will be added to your account. If there is a credit balance, then it is 100% protected by the Ofgem Safety Net (Consumer Levy).
When GBEnergy failed, the Coop just took over the existing DD mandates. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

This is Ofgem's advice on thatShould I cancel my direct debit?
Your new supplier will soon contact you to explain how they will take on your account, including any direct debit arrangements. They will also tell you what will happen to any credit balance you may have had with your old supplier.
You can cancel your direct debit before the new supplier contacts you, if you want to. You will be able to set up a new direct debit with the new supplier.
Scottish Power have been appointed by Ofgem to take over all Extra Energy customers from this morning.
Direct Debits are not collected over the weekend (i.e on non banking days)
As Hengus says, when CEL took over GB Energy, CEL also took over the existing DD mandates (where people had not canceled them)0 -
Does anyone know how to access accounts in situations like this to see the balance. I know I'm quite a lot in credit but would be nice to know exactly how much. Rather frustratingly, I asked Extra Energy to refund my credit fairly recently but they used the old argument that they recommended leaving it to cover the higher usage in colder months. Last time I'll be doing that!0

Please could the mods move this thread to the correct 'Energy' board.
This thread is nothing to do with 'LPG, Heating Oil, Solid and Other Fuels'0
