  • the lack of 3g is apparently because it drains the battery too much

I've got an Ipod Classic, which I think is the best gadget i've ever owned and pound for pound the best mp3 player on the market.. but seriously, I think my crusty old K800 puts the iPhone to shame

I have one working on the Orange network from the States, and it's an excellent phone:confused:

Unless you have used it, don't give people your views:rolleyes:

I don't know if I would sign up to a min 18mon/£35 contract for it though. Unless your going to be doing that anyway, in that case go for it.

Only problem I have with it is that the headphone socket is recessed so my Shure headphones don't fit, but an adapter is on it's way:D

I'm personally waiting for Sony Ericsson's W960i Walkman phone out this year.
Its sleek, 8GB memory, Wi-Fi, 3.2mp Cam, and has touch screen

That's half the problem though, I don't think many people will buy it (because you do have to buy it @£270+ as well as sign up to an expensive contract), unless they have been sucked in by the pre-sales hype. What people are saying, ok it looks nice, but there is far far better phones for alot less money or free and not so expensive contracts. Afterall isn't what this site is all about? [/2p];)

Friend at work has one from the states and he is not overly impressed by it and I think its a glorified paper weight.

The screen smudges easily because you have it against your face to talk and then all the grease of your face is on the screen... lovely. No MMS, poor camera, iffy keyboard and if you want to replace the battery you have to have it sent to apple... Software? Apple only... ah so it might be your phone but apple effectively own it.

As Dazz has pointed out the HTC TyTN II has it all and is probably the best phone available - it has everything but the kitchen sink. HTC phones are rebadged over here as O2's XDAs or T-Mobile's MDAs (TyTN II is the MDA Vario III) and Vodaphone and Orange also rebadge them as their own phones in some cases. Excellent brand, well supported and if you have any business use for them they beat blackberries hands down.
Faith is believing what you know ain't so...
  • Hi DazzUK
Could you tell me where you got your phone and on what contract. I currently have HTC's T-Mobile Compact 2 and am nearly out of contract so looking for a replacement. After having used a PDA for a year I don't think I could go back to an ordinary phone.
    Thanks
    Natasha

    Hi,
I got my TyTn ll from Orange. The only Orange sticker is on the back. They do load it with their own home screen, but using the XDA-Developers site I had it back to the default HTC home screen in about an hour, and i have never used one before!! WARNING - DONT FLASH THE ROM THOUGH AS THIS CAN BRICK THE PHONE. Just use the HTC home screens on that website.
I was already on a contract that had expired. I phoned them and said I was going to O2 to buy an iPhone so they reduced my rental by £5, gave me twice as many minutes and texts and the phone for free!! I now get 400mins and 100texts for £20.

As i said before, this is the best phone and gadget I have ever had

The price is insane here. Personally I'll get a friend to bring one back from the US for around 195 pounds, net cost 100 after selling my current phone (which I got for free anyway). Unlock it myself, then use it on my existing data-inclusive contract. If you have to sign up to a new contract then it's not worth it imo.

As to the device itself, really lame it doesn't have 3G or A2DP - Apple seems to have missed a trick with the latter, given that its Ipod functions are one of the main reasons people want them. Shame also the camera is rubbish compared to some of the models Nokia and Ericsson are turning out. Still, even with the flaws it makes a nice Ipod (which I was going to get anyway), with the addition of an excellent web interface. For occasional use at least network speeds are fine on EDGE, although if your network doesn't have that you wouldn't want to use GPRS.

Overall, the device is nice in many ways, but for the price it's flawed. For me it works simply because I can get it cheap, and not pay for a contract. For most people it's not worth it imo.
  • when i first saw the advert for this phone i thought wicked touch screen i have to get one but once i looked on the 02 web site and saw the only difference from the iphone and my sony ericsson was it was touch screen i got a w810i and that has a 2 mega pixel camera, so why bring out a new phone that costs a bomb that the only good thing it has is the touch screen what a waste of money and dont think they will sell many. o2 are offering this phone for £260 somthing and thats on contract what are they on i wouldnt pay that for pay as you go.

Slight difference there - the Iphone's screen is 3.5" diagonal, the w810 is 1.9". That's over three times the size, as well as being much higher resolution. This is why the Iphone works for web browsing, and no other phones do (and I've had bucketloads of windows mobile devices).

    Aside from that, I like:

    1) the yahoo mail integration is really nice - other webby phones are useless with webmail because the page loads too slowly and renders badly.

    2) ipod functions, obviously. However, I'm using it to play TV shows more than I thought I would. Bored moment, whip out the Iphone and watch last night's Weeds/Lost/whatever.

    3) Youtube! This is a great idea. Terrific fun to show off your own vids, look up football goals etc.

    4) Google maps.

Generally though, quick access to a range of net sites is nice. Even when I'm at home I tend to use the iphone for googlemaps, checking my email, weather, tv schedule etc. Pick up the phone, whizz around the interface, you're at the site in 5 seconds.

For all it's letdowns (3G!), it's an excellent device, although definitely overpriced if you get it on contract. This is no Apple fan speaking either - I've always used PCs, have 3 of them, have built countless ones, and there's no way I'm changing.
