This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Enough said about my wake up time today. Too much on my mind again

Anyway off early today to face the Manchester traffic. Usual stuff really will arrive too early but better that than sit panicking in hideous jams. New site today but still bang in the centre. Will need to find it but apparently its near the station so shouldnt be an issue. Could go on the train but thats as much if not more hassle.

Sandwiches made ...tuna mayo and sweetcorn with some soreen for pud :o what time is the betting starting on how quickly they will be eaten

Scampi for tea last night probably tuna pasta tonight to use the sandwich stuff up.

Catching up with the jungle which i'm loving. Didn't think Holly would work but fair play she's really good.

Right im off to try to avoid my sandwiches so that at least they get in the car with me :)

    Good morning everyone :hello:
Thank you Nelski for starting us off and I think you will make it until 10am before munching your sarnies (which sound very nice by the way) :D.

I had no sleep last night but I don't feel too bad surprisingly. I predict that by this afternoon though I will feel like a slug :(. I would go up to bed now but the grandchildren are coming over before school again and I want to make sure I am awake to let them in.

The funeral was amazing apparently yesterday with over 150 bikers escorting the coffin to the crematorium. Steve said it was a very moving service but afterwards there was a lot of laughter as friends and relatives remembered the antics my Brother in Law got up to. I wish I could have gone to pay my respects but never mind. We have invited Steve's sister to come and stay if she needs to get away for a bit.

No idea again what to have for dinner tonight. I will send one of the kids to freezer dive and see what they can find. I feel less and less enthusiastic about meal times as I cannot stand up to cook any more so I am reliant on the kids. They do a very good job with a little supervision but I miss spending time in the kitchen.

Right, I am off to put the heating on as it is freezing here. Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx
  • Morning all
Thanks for the thread Nelski and hugs to all those in need.

I've been up for an hour, I'm hoping to grab a nana nap later.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes. We went to a local pub for a meal, it's the first time CHS has been out in the evening since his stroke, we ate early so the place was quiet. We didn't stay for dessert as he was wiped out by the time we'd had our main course.

    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • Good morning everyone, another early waker here, but I got my sleep in one chunk so that was good.

Thanks for starting us off Nelski. Good luck with the traffic this morning.

Hugs, dumpling, I hope you manage to get some rest over the course of the day.

And hugs to everyone who needs one or more.

Today I've Scrabble, then urgent errands and a residents' meeting for the building I live in. As a relative newbie I'll be watching and listening. We're all equal owners and the meetings are organised by the company we employ to manage the communal areas of the property.

Foodwise I've cooked chicken to use up, possibly in a stir fry. More soup to make and freeze too.

So not the most exciting of days, but in retirement every day is a blessing. Having to quit due to burnout was horrible at the time and not the way I wanted to leave, but I'm jolly glad to be retired despite the financial squeeze until I reach state pension age. To anyone feeling the pressure, or spread too thin, if you can possibly manage financially, put your health first.

I hope we all have the best day possible. xxx
  • Good morning, and thanks Nelski for starting off.

It seems damp outside, last night was really cold and frosty, but the frost seems to have disappeared overnight.

Yesterday was a quiet day, the usual stuff of housework, and standing gazing out of the window. I'm terrible for that.

I'm going into Newcastle today to meet up with Dil and a few others, it's her birthday so we are having lunch out. Dh can't go because he has an appt at the optician's, and Dd can't go because the time scale is a bit tight for school pick up, so I'll represent them.

Glad you and CHS managed to get out for a meal Hester, even if you weren't out long it's a bit of a change,

Hope your sandwiches survive for a few hours Nelski, and good luck with your traffic battle.

    Speky, hope you're doing ok.

Thinking of TA, and anyone else who is struggling with life, or illness.

    Take care folks

    Morning everyone

Nelski - thanks for starting us off x

Hugs to those that want/need one x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

DH and myself up enjoying peaceful cuppas, I'm showered, dressed and just finished brekkie. DS1 getting ready for work and DS2 still in his pit, will wake him to see if he wants to run this morning.

Dinner last night was pork loins, mash, broc, LO cauli/broc cheese, green beans and gravy. Tonight I'm not sure so will organise later.

Wasn't overly productive again yesterday, although I did get the xmas cake made after going to SM to buy more butter after the boys used what I'd bought on toast. That's the trouble with having a house full of men, you buy food to make specific recipes and turn your back and they've eaten it! I will get the fruit weighed out for the xmas puds and get that soaking in rum, hoping to get those made Saturday morning. Hoover did get shoved over the carpets.

DH and I are visiting a shopping centre today to do the xmas shopping, it's now become a tradition, this is the 3rd year and it works quite well, hopefully this will be the same as I haven't been to this shopping centre before although DH has. I've checked it out online and it looks like it'll be ok. Hoping to get it all pretty much done today as other than 2 x packets of stollen, and now a made xmas cake and the fresh meat ordered and part paid for I've done nothing else. We have a birthday in the house in December too.

    Keep safe and well x

    Morning All

Cold but dry here, stoked the fire up before I went to bed so it's still quite warm inside.

Glad you had a meal out HH, hope CHS is recovering well.
Sounds like a good turnout for BILs funeral dumpling.

Nothing exciting happening here, I'm having a bit of a slow week!

Have a good day, take care. XX

  • Good Morning chums and what a cold and frosty morning it is I think Jack Frost has been round as its white everywhere outside this morning, but hopefully it will warm up as the day goes on.

I think you may last until around 9ish this morning Nelski as you were up pretty early :) depends how busy you are I expect.

Well done on an early birthday munch Hester and a change of scenery may have helped you both

We went to the local pub last night for a meal as my son-in-law should have been going to his graduation yesterday but funds and his innate shyness put him off . Bless him he is such a lovely chap but he really isn't good with crowds of people and is only happy when he is with the family .

I must say probably the last time we will use this pub though I had booked it for 6.30 so it wouldn't be too crowded and we got there at 6.20 sat down ordered our food and drinks and food arrived at 7.40 !!! which considering it was an ordinary meal in a pub chain and the place was almost empty I wasn't pleased about and when it did turn up it wasn't that hot and not very appetising but we were so hungry we ate and DD said we'll not bother with a pudding or we will be here until midnight so on the way home we stopped off at the big Tescos and she bought a cake and some profiteroles and we went home and had those with a cuppa.Certainly won't be using that pub again.

Still Simon was happy at least and he always is with the family around him.

Today I have my gardener coming and I think it may be his last visit before the Christmas break so I will dig out a bottle of wine for him as a little gift.

Later this afternoon I have my 'flu jab as our local Drs have been out of stock for the past three weeks so there's a nice thing to look forward to :)
I have some chilli chicken from the freezer for dinner tonight which I will have with mash and veg.Slowly making more and more room in the freezer at last

Hope everyone is well and not getting caught up in the 'Black Friday' madness

My DGS Danny and his wife have tickets for the big Macy's parade in NYC today as its Thanksgiving day out there but they have to be in their places at 6.00.a.m. in the morning and apparently its extremely cold, but his wife Hayley is making u flasks of coffee to keep them warm and is buying those fishermen's hand warmers to put inside their gloves, very sensible lass is our Hayley :):) she will make sure they are well wrapped up for the event

Right the kettle is calling so hugs to all who are in need andI hope Mrs TA is coping ok and taff and all the others who are having a tough time at the moment

Take care chums and keep warm

    JackieO xx

    Morning folks.

It's very murky outside, not sure what weather will do next. Yesterday I lit the woodburner in the afternoon and was very cosy. That east wind gets through every piece of stone.

Last night I got through a lot of online work, checking progress of my open learning students. It takes ages. Anyway, it's done for another fortnight. Also made a few calls to students to chase them up.

Today I'll be heading to Glasgow again after my teaching session. My DM's GP phoned me yesterday (at 7pm), she's going out to visit DM to let her ask questions. Very nice of her, that'll help reassure DM.

Virtual hugs all round and I wish everyone a happy Thursday.
  • Good morning everyone,

A very frosting morning in Manchester.

I somehow managed to turn my alarm off this morning. Don't even remember it. It goes off at 5.30am and it's always a struggle to get up. Today I was having a dream about sitting an exam in high school that I hadn't studied for and then I sort of had this realisation that in real life, I felt unusually rested. So I bolted upright and turned to the bedside clock to see it read 7.10am. I would have put my mortgage on it that my alarm didn't go off!

Last night was quite busy and productive after work, with making dinner, tidying up and making calls. I recon I'll have much the same tonight, and even more impetus to go a run since I didn't make the gym this morning.

I also found out last night that I've somehow lost my newest and best winter jacket!! How is that even possible!! I fear I've left it at the hotel that I was staying in all of last week but I called and they said it wasn't there. After a process of elimination it can only be in the hotel or I've dropped it leaving the hotel to the car. I'm going to give them a visit this afternoon and ask in person. Raging though!!

My new bank card is due to arrive tomorrow or Monday. My new phone is set to arrive tomorrow too. So I should be ready to rock and roll. I do hope my card comes in on Friday as I'm wanting to make a start of Xmas shopping as I have bought absolutely nothing given all the upheaval of the last couple of months!

    Right, best get cracking.

Nelski - I think I'm visiting the famous Chrismas markets tomorrow night as my colleagues and I go out for drinks. If not, I might pop in myself on Saturday.
Dumpling - You were always busy int the kitchen previously until your legs started playing up. I hope you're able to get on your feet soon as I bet it'll do a lot for your mentally, and not just physically.
Midgie - Well said! Hope the meeting goes well today and do fill me in on the topic discussed. I've never been able to attend any of mine.
Ruby - if you had made them, then yes! Your cooking and baking always sounds delicious.
Jackie - Disappointing to hear that the pub grub wasn't that good, but your replacement dessert sounds nice. And I also mean that in a family sense too. Well done to you SIL too!
