Isn't this old news, in fact so old that it's growing whiskers on its whiskers? If there is anyone out there who doesn't know that there is a possibility that their smart meter will go dumb when they switch energy supplier? If there are I'd like to know what planet they are on.
Good ol' Lords and MSE eh. ROFL for jumping on the anti-smart-meter bandwagon!0 -
I think that you may be asking too much of MSE. It gets its information from MoneySupermarket - an Ofgem-accredited price comparison site. It would be doing suppliers and consumers a disservice if it didn’t show tariffs that require a smart meter. At the end of the day, the supplier and tariff that we choose is a personal decision.0

Sorry if this is a daft question as not up with it all.
My current supplier keeps saying we are in the area and they want me to book a appointment to have a smart meter fitted.
Am I right in saying that if I agree to this I cant switch suppliers as I have been told as different companies have different meters?
Any help in understanding this would be of help
Cheers

You can switch suppliers as often as you want. Your "smart" meter will simply not automatically transmit readings to your current supplier, hence it becomes "dumb" and you supply readings yourself.0

Personally, I don't see any reason for not having a smart meter fitted. Ok the chances are that at this time the smart meter is likely to become dumb when you switch supplier and you will then have to manually submit readings. But in that case there is virtually no difference between a dumb meter and a dumb smart meter: In both cases you have to manually submit readings.
Energy suppliers are offering smart meters because they get fined if they don't keep up their quota. Without that penalty they would probably not bother to fit them.0 -
Am I alone in suspecting that someone, somewhere, got a nice little brown envelope for helping smart meters along?Ian0
