OP = Original Poster - you!

NIP = Notice of Intended Prosecution.

If your car is caught speeding (for example) a NIP is sent to the registered keeper (RK) at the address the DVLA have. If there's no response that can lead to a prosecution and conviction in your absence, six points on your licence, unpaid fines and (worst case) revocation.

Hence the suggestion to check your licence.

Original Poster and Notice of Intended Prosecution. Any speeding or parking tickets will be sent to the V5 address and unless you have arrangements to get mail from that old address there could be a whole lot of pain coming to get you !

As above, if the insurers do get funny a complaint all the way to the FOS if necessary as the failure to change the V5 address is not material to the claim.
  • Thanks - I'm not so worried about parking fines or speeding tickets going to my old address as I have friends living there now who are very good about forwarding my email. However, I will change my lisence over to my new address straigh away. I'm much more worried about the insurance company not paying my claim if they say the V5 for my car (which they now have as its a right off) and the address on my car insurance (my current address) don't match up. Do you think there's a chance of that?

All that is required on the V5 is an address by which the registered keeper may be contactable. If you have friends living at that address that forward your mail on, there is no issue with that being the address on the V5. Be firm with your insurer.
