Have you had a lodger?

I wonder if any of you have/had a lodger and could share your experience?
I used to be a lodger myself and since I've bought a two bed flat, I am renting out the spare room, mainly for the extra income. I was lucky to find a weekday lodger, who doesn't cook and doesn't spend a lot of time at home. However, I am not very keen on him as a person, and I think I get annoyed by the little things he does just because I don't like him. Rationallly thinking, I'm very lucky but I can't help having second thoughts... Asking him to leave would mean changing the locks (extra expense), looking for someone new and possibly not getting another mon-fri person. So I keep biting my tongue, especially while I'm settling in and have high expenses.
Have you ever lived with someone you disliked?
Would be interesting to read your stories.

That said, of course, people do all the time. You aren't looking to marry this person. This is a business transaction.
What is it about this person that makes you so uncomfortable, because on the surface they sound ideal.0 -

Thanks... This was a very odd thread, went from cooking to domestic violence?
The op doesn't seem to have a very good judgement in my eyes, so her experience feels irrelevant, although somewhat entertaining.0 -
Changing the locks is £5. So sorry but extra expense doesn't cover it.

£5? Is there even a lock for a fiver, plus I'd have to pay someone to change it...
He is very vain, a middle aged womaniser... The way he talks about women makes me feel uncomfortable. I let him understand that and he talks about his romances less, but since he's been with me for a few months and I got to know him quite well, I can't help disliking him...
I agreed to let him bring his local lover for occasional sex, but it feels pretty awkward when I'm at home. I know that he would either move or bring her in secretly if I told him to stop. I hope he's only bringing one woman?? He lies a lot so who knows...
There's been a few things that I had to repeat a couple times, eg locking the doors when leaving. Sometimes he seems to be doing things his own way because he knows better. Eg I was looking after a pet for a few weeks and asked him not to allow it into his room, he still did...I asked this for a reason!0 -

You don't have to be his friend

I know that he would either move or bring her in secretly if I told him to stop. I hope he's only bringing one woman?? He lies a lot so who knows... - why do you care if it's he same person or not? What has his sex life got to do with you?
There's been a few things that I had to repeat a couple times, eg locking the doors when leaving. - fair enough Sometimes he seems to be doing things his own way because he knows better. At the end of the day its your house and you can do as you please. But obviously be prepared to lose the extra income, or put up with worse.
It seems to be a very high and mighty attitude towards how two other people spend their time.0 -
Comms69, I don't care what he does outside the house, but it does feel awkward when I hear the bed squeaking etc...it's a small flat after all. I agreed to let him bring a woman he told me about, at the time I didn't know there are many more...and they keep changing... I hope there are no random girls coming for a coffee whilst I'm at work.0

Why? Does your contract say he can't have visitors over for "coffee" when you are at work?0 -

I just changed my door lock, it cost me £49 for a quality lock with 5 keys, I fitted it myself.
You could probably buy a cheap lock with 3 keys for less than £20
My last lodger was great; but then again I would probly be ok with your lodger.
My lodger cooked, not a problem.0 -

Why do you care? Do you care who the butcher is shagging?0 -

Thank you.
You're probably more tolerant, I should improve in that areaI know he's a decent lodger, I just wanted to hear about people's experiences, especially if they lived with someone they were not fond of.
Comms69, the butcher isn't having sex in my flat while I'm in the next room.
HampshireH, fair enough if you don't care who comes to your house while you're away...I do.0
