Money Moral Dilemma: Should I split flight delay compensation with my friend?

Assuming your friend paid for their ticket, legally, they are entitled to their share of the compensation, as you claimed their share as well as your share. So you are not entitled to keep any of their share. However, if you explain how much effort you put into getting the compensation, your friend would hopefully reward you with a share of their compensation. That's friendship.

Well your friend is entitled to the compensation as they were with you when you were delayed.

If you're feeling aggrieved due to the amount of work you've done to get this comp, then it might be worth while discussing this with your friend to see if they're willing for you to have a bit more of the comp for this reason.

The amount depends on how long you've spent on it and if you've incurred any expenses.


They might like to take you out for a meal if the comp is a lot of money, it doesn't say how much is involved.

If you are any kind of friend at all, then you would not even ask! Split it with your friend! You might have chased it up but they were delayed too!!

Eu261/2004 is very clear it does not matter who made the booking or who paid for the tickets compensation goes to each passenger even children even on a free seat as long as there was a payment somewhere like a booking fee. Charging for doing the work would be a bit mean and I doubt it would stand up in a court and would probably lose you a friend or two.

If you sit down and think about it, you will realize that both of you were inconvenienced - not just you.

It matters not a whit who handled the claim, how much work was involved to settle it or how long it took. You were not doing it in a professional capacity, but as a favour to your friend, and there's consequently no reason I can think of that justifies your doing anything other than paying her half of what you obtained.

Lots of people do things or provide services on behalf of others, but don't expect anything in return. It's what friendship is all about.

Now , now you KNOW this isn't true from our conversation on the Norwegian thread.
The airline will pay out to anyone on the PNR, some airlines ask for POA forms to be completed , others just pay to whoever claims it .

True example I paid for family flights (different surnames) and provided Norwegian with completed signed POA form (it's on their website) and they've paid the money to me (despite the fact I flew home on a different flight to them a week later, received this month so very current !
It is absolute nonsense that the airline will insist on making separate individual payments to each passenger including children.

In the imaginary scenario posed in the first post , many airlines would pay to the lead passenger , some will want written confirmation (possibly only if surnames are different)
