Boiler question

Bought my first house earlier this year which has a standard boiler rather than a combi boiler which our previously rented house had so just after a bit of help.

We have gas central heating, and it is controlled by a switch connected to the boiler and also a thermostat which controls the temperature for the whole house. Currently the boiler is switched always off and when we want to put the heating or hot water on we use the temporary over ride +1 hour button (there is one each for heating and hot water). The heating will only come on if the +1 button has been pressed and if the thermostat has been turned up from 0. At some point in the future we may want to put a smart thermostat in so would like to be able turn the heating on by just using the thermostat.

I think the only way for this would be to set the heating on the boiler switch to be contentiously on but I am just wondering would this use much electricity/gas?

This is the switch we use https://salus-controls.com/uk/files/Salus-EP200-Manual-001-cr.pdf

Thanks.

The controller/pogrammer that you've got is the timeswitch which turns the boiler on and off so you need to leave the boiler switched on so the programmer can control it. Likewise you need to leave the programmer on so it retains it's time settings.

The programmer has three on/off cycles and is pre- programmed but you might want to change the timing to suit your requirements. It should then left in the auto position so it can control the heating and hot water in line with programmed times.

I'm guessing that if you have to keep pressing the +1hr setting then it's obviously not been programmed correctly or the timer back-up battery is going flat because you keep switching it all off.

Learn how to set it up and let the heating & hot water come on and off as required. The heating will be controlled by the room thermostat when the programmer switches the heating on.

The standby energy on the boiler is very low and it will only consume gas and leccy when the programmer & thermostats call for heat.

If the thermostat is set to 0 and you have to turn it up when you want heating, then you are running the system wrong.

Set the stat at the temperature you want. Then set the timer at the times when you want heat (whether that is constant, or between pre-set times eg morning and evening).

    Leave the boiler on.

When the timer tells the boiler it's time for heat, the boiler will check the thermostat which will say either "I'm already warm enough - do nothing" or " Brrr it's cold. Switch on and heat us up".
