Doubling Electric Direct Debit

My mother's [who's 85] has had an email from her electric supplier saying that they are introducing a new direct debit system of doubling the amount you pay in the winter and then reducing it in the Summer, I can see how that would work for some but pensioners on state pension do not have the luxury of extra disposable income, can they do this?

Yes - they have an obligation to ensure that their customers do not go into debt.
Has your mother received her Winter Fuel Payment - that's what it is for.
PS Does your mother also get the Warm Homes Discount ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
If it's Outfox the Market, then you've missed the thread here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5924617/outfox-the-market-direct-debit-changes
Otherwise, they probably can, and she can switch to another supplier if she doesn't like it.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
