I did have my own thread, but it got merged with the another :(

I'm replacing my 2½ year old Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) with a Xiaomi A2 Lite

The new phone doesn't have NFC (?)

I know that it I just log it into my google account, most stuff will transfer over but my two main concerns that I'm sure won't are texts and emails
I use the standard Android sms app and use K9 for my email - does anyone know an easy way of bringing over either (or preferably both) of these lots of info.

Will WhatsApp just transfer over once I log in??

Cheers

:)

From memory when I went from a Motorola handset to Samsung there was a Motorola app to transfer data etc across to the new handset, think there were tick boxes as to what I wanted to transfer to the new handset.
  • In WhatsApp you can do a backup to Google Drive or elsewhere which you can use to restore texts and data on a different phone.
Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.

WhatsApp chats and data will not carry over unless they are backed up to Google Drive - WhatsApp > settings > chats > chat backup > BACK UP. Best to select a regular backup in case your phone is lost etc.

I used K9 on a previous phone but did not bother on the next one, so I don't know what the client retains. But everything will remain in your actual email account(s) when you log in directly.

I've used SMS backup and restore to transfer text messages to a new phone. Worked well. I delete it after use, don't see a need to keep it until I change again.

I'll second the use of SMS backup & restore for texts. I've just moved to a Sony and after its own Xperia Transfer app failed, I went back to SMS backup and it worked with no issues. No idea about emails though.

I would suggest you to use imap in the future.

    Pop3 mail data transfer K9mail

    Here's the solution:

To import old emails from your old cell phone, this worked for me transferring from a Samsung S3 to a Note 4 on the AT&T network:

First exit out of the K-9 Mail program on your old and new cell phones. Connect the old cell phone to your computer, double click on your cell model in My Computer and open the folders Phone/Android/com.fsck.k9 and copy the "files" folder to your desktop. Safely disconnect the old cell phone and connect your new cell phone. On the folder you saved to your desktop open the folders: Phone/Android/com.fsck.k9/files and do the same with the connected new cell phone, copy from the old cell folder and replace on the new cell phone these 2 files and folder:

    Folder and contents .db_att
    Data Base file .db
    DB-JOUNAL file .db-journal
*The name of the 2 files and folder will be the same but with a different extension, the file name might be different for each user.

You do not need to copy over the .nomedia file.

Now open K-9 Mail on the new phone and you will see your old emails.

    SMS transfer :

I also use SMS backup and restore

(Why don't you use Signal Private Messenger ? )

I like (older) Moto Gs, which is honest decent hardware, you just need to to install lineageOS, which make your Moto run smoothly. Yes, Xiaomi A2 lite is really great, but you have no reason to dump your sweet 2015 Moto G!! :A

Official LneageOS 14.1 (Android 7.1) but unofficial LineageOS 16 (Android 9) has developed already. You can play with them, really fun:cool:

    Hi Toshi
    Thanks for all the input
I don't like IMAP as I keep different stuff on my phone to my PC :o

I tried the K9 transfer thing
    https://k9mail.github.io/documentation/settings/import_export.html

but, although it brought over all the accounts, it didn't bring over any of the older emails so will try your suggestion over the weekend.

I used SMS back up and restore and it worked fine. :)

I use Aquamail on my Android mobile which I find a very good email client, have used it for 3 years.

There is a setting that allows you to configure how far back in time it will go to copy over IMAP mail. It does this to conserve the (relatively) small mobile phone memory.

Perhaps you could check if k9mail has a similar configuration option?

    Hi again

Sadly, the suggestion wasn't possible - there was no /com.fsck.k9

anywhere in any of the folders, even with 'hidden folders' ticked :(
Even a search fro K9 found nothing!

    Oh well ..... thanks anyway.
