Argos Con.

I wanted to purchase a product listed as £189, but overnight, the price went up by £40. On the Argos Facebook page I expressed my disappointment, and one of their staff told me the price should be £189. Armed with this, I went to my local store and showed them the posting in Facebook, but they refused to sell at the lower price because their system said £229. I wrote to Argos to complain about their sub-standard service. The reply has shocked me. They state that even if you reserve a product, and then the price goes up, you are expected to pay the higher price.
They say, 'I can advise our prices are subject to change at any time with no prior warning and reserving an item doesn't reserve the sale price - just the item.'
Not a good way to run a business in my opinion, and I certainly won't shop with them again. Luckily, I was able to purchse what I wanted at another leading store, and at the lower price.

    According to their web site:-

    b) If you reserve a product and the price changes (due to normal fluctuations e.g. goods going into or coming out of promotion, but not a pricing error) before you collect the item, you may request to pay the lowest of i) the price on reservation or ii) the prevailing price in store at the time of collection. This will also apply if your reservation is extended but not if the reservation collection window has expired.

Proof of reservation would include: -

    Reservation Number
    Print out from the internet
    Text message/email showing reservation number

You have a choice when you reserve, pay now so the price doesn't change or pay on collection where it might. It has been this way for way for a few years & isn't actually a con. Loads of reservations might give them a tip that the item is in demand so that they increase the price.

While that is true, you can also pay the price that applied when you made the reservation as per the Argos T&Cs, and OP should persue this with the store.
  • Your post isn't clear.
Did you reserve the item, and the price went up? If so, I would understandably be a little miffed.

If you didn't actually reserve it and the price went up, that's not Argos' fault. If prices never went up, it'd still be £7,000 for a new house, £1,200 for a new car and £9.50 for a week's shop.
Things have to increase in price at some point, and you just got unlucky.

To avoid this happening in future, reserve and pay for the item you want up front.

It probably went up in price so they could bring it back down again and advertise it at a "sale" price. ;)

Reservations used to carry a message "The price you pay is the price instore at the time of purchase" or words to that effect

Watch them reduce it by £10 for Black Friday and have a riot in the shop as people fight each other over it.

    Hows it sub-standard service?

Sounds like they've totally met their conditions of sale and service on their website.

Prices vary. If you snooze you lose.

    Not
necessarily, another user quotes the ts and Cs which are worthy of discussion. But OP seems to be ranting here so it likely won't progress much further.
