WHSmith clubcard finishing?!

Yesterday when my mum handed over her clubcard at a Smiths store to have points put on, she was told "sorry, we're not running the clubcard points scheme any longer".

She was then given a leaflet telling her that it was all going to be an online e-club from now on, with money off offers by e-mail only, and although points could no longer be collected, that she could still spend the points she already had.

Now I've not heard of this, I got points last Friday with no indication, and I have seen vouchers on here that are valid until the end of December at least.

There is nothing on the WHSmith website that I can see either.

Has anyone else been told this, or is it just a sales assistant getting the wrong end of the stick? I would think that if she hadn't been given this leaflet about it.

  • I contact WH Smith a few months ago, here's a copy of their email:

We are changing the Clubcard scheme to provide you with an alternative offer which will give you greater savings every month. This will be in the form of vouchers rather than points - immediate savings and easier to use!We are currently trialling a scheme, in which some of our stores are taking part, whereby we are encouraging our customers to enter into an email relationship with us instead. In turn, we will guarantee that they will receive a monthly email with at least £10 worth of vouchers included. The introductory email will have £20 worth of vouchers! Our stores should be displaying relevant display material as from 1st August 2007 to advise our customers that points will no longer be issued from 1st September 2007 but points can be redeemed up until Friday 29 February 2008. After that time, you will not be able to redeem any points and the current Clubcard scheme will cease to run in participating stores. I regret our staff did not advise you of these changes correctly, resulting in this confusion. Please note that Points on cards which have not been used for more than 18 months are automatically removed under the terms and conditions of the scheme.

Oh that's awful - I love collecting the points. And I won't save more because I imagine the vouchers will be £5 off £20 for example, which i don't often do. And I already get emails from them - so what's the diference!!

I don't get it though - i have never spent my points, have amassed over £60 of points and they have never to my knowledge been removed for not using them.

So I guess that means I have to spend all my points by March 08 then. Although I thought mum was told she could still spend them indefinately.

    Annoying....

Remember it is only in certain areas that the Clubcard is finishing. It is currently only a trial. So, if you don't live in the NW you will be able to continue to collect and redeem clubcard point, e.g. last week I got 500bonus points unless they decide to extend the trial.

Is this being rolled out Nationwide?

I was told in the Exeter branch that they are stopping it and could redeem my current points but did not earn any more.

I have a leaflet about the new Privilege Club (online only) which says all Clubcard points must be redeemed by 28th February 2009.

WH Smiths has announced that all Clubcard points must be redeemed by 28th February 2009.

Leaflets in some areas are announcing the replacement of Clubcards with the online Privilege Club scheme. Link to this here:

I think different areas are being rolled out at different times throughout the country. But you need to use any that you've been saving (they disappear after 18 months anyway).

One problem I found - you can only redeem them if the computer is online to the store. If not, they can't read your card for the points total.
