Best Value EV

Looking to replace my diesel and replace it with an EV, what is the best value EV currently?

I've looked at the Leaf and Zoe, ideally I'd like range over 200 miles but could probably manage with 150 miles+

Daily commute is 40 miles each way, I can charge for free at work and work from home twice a week so mileage will be around 240 a week, we have a second car for longer journeys.

I do the odd longer run of ~120 miles and very occasionally 200 miles, hence the range requirement.

Cheers.

To be honest if your current car is working fine I'd wait. I fully intend my next car to be an EV and EVs have been something I've had an interest in for a while. There has been a quite fast increase in the technologies in EVs, particularly in the battery area, and there are more manufacturers currently in the process of bringing out their own range. The rate of development and more manufacturers announcing their intentions has delayed my decision to buy one now.

I would keep the current car going, bang what the monthly repayments for an EV would be in a savings account, see where the market is in a couple of years. You won't be losing money doing this paying for fuel when you could've recharged for free because you'd have had a fairly hefty amount of depreciation to fund over that time which would be much higher than the cost of diesel/repairs.

A lad i work with has just bought a used 30kwh leaf after many months of research he paid £12500 for it with about 20k on the clock, in the real world it does about 120ish depending on the weather

me im holding out for when the new 2018 40 kwh leafs drop in price in a fews years time , i think they look great much better than the gen 1 leaf the new one looks like a bigger version of a pulsar

like the above poster says at the moment the prices are still high and if you are buying to cut fuel bills then the depreciation on a newer ev will notbe worth it, best advise hold on see what happens to the market

    > I've never experienced such cheap motoring in my life

You don't save money getting an EV. There is literally no scenario where buying an EV currently saves money over buying an ICE equivalent even if charging costs are £0 due to the premium you pay when you buy and the depreciation when you sell. People are very reluctant to pay much for an EV with a 5 year old battery.

    Real 200 mile range?

Tesla or BMW i3 with range extender.

Bear in mind that quoted range seems to be about 30% more than what is actually achievable.

You left out the Hyundai Kona EV !
Getting a lot of good reviews - good luck getting one though !

Kona electric is a welcome move, but it's still not money saving for a private buyer. It might be better as a company car once the new low BIK tax rate starts.

    Kona Electric, 64kW, £33k to £35k
    Normal ICE Kona - £17k to £23k

So you're talking around an extra £12k to £16k upfront, so even if you keep it for 10 years, you've got to get at least £1200 - £1600 a year in fuel, tax and maintenance savings just to break even.

I like them, but you're still much better off with a regular used car. For new cars what you fuel it on is pretty much irrelevant from a finance perspective as the cost is almost all in the depreciation.

A used Zoe or Leaf are probably your only options at present. Though neither will do 200 miles, 120 miles will be ok.

100% incorrect in the premium end of the market. My next car before I got our EV was going to be a BMW M5 or Jaguar XJR. Incomparison our Tesla had the same purchase price, but 10% the running costs and much much better deprecation- Looking at AutoTrader for a used Model X I would loss less than £5-7k in deprecation over 18 months which is betrer than any Audi SQ7/SVR RR/Caynee over the same time period, all of those cars already have class leading residual.

If your just talking about cheapest way to A and B than I agree, nothing can beat bangernomics. However if your buying new EVs are in many ways a better buy than equivalent combustion cars.

So one last time just to check...? An EV vs an ICE city car, both £4k. One has no fuel costs, the other £2k per annum plus £140 road tax. I must be missing some costs here as I'm sure my EV works out cheaper???

The bit you're missing is that EV and ICE aren't the same price, the EV is more expensive even when used, and your fuel cost of £2k per year suggests quite high mileage, 15,000+ miles per year? You're going to struggle to do that with a £4k EV, if you can find one, as it's range will be less than 100 miles at that age/price.

Oh and electricity isn't free, you'll be paying several hundred each year in electricity costs. Still a good fuel cost saving, but not free to run.

[Edit] if you know anywhere selling an EV for £4k, with enough range for long runs so it could comfortably do 15,00+ miles a year, post the link, because I'd certainly be interested. Only cars I've seen even slightly near come with the Flex battery lease, with a monthly lease charge on top almost as much as I spend on fuel with an ICE.

    Jeez, scratches head..........

Well it does as you still have to charge it be it at home whicj will cost you) be it at the services (which it will cost you) or be it at work where you may be able to charge for free and the employer pays for it

I totally agree that running an ev over a similar ice car is a lot cheaper, the lad at work who has the leaf used to put fuel in at £150 per month in his ice car, the elecric in the leaf per month costs about £25 at eco 7, so yes there is a massive saving to be made,im hold out for when the new leaf gets a bit cheaper as i really dont like the gen 1 its a bit ugly imho
