npower overcharged

I’m in a bit of an odd situation and was wondering what my best course of action should be.

I switched from npower back in June 2017. I received all the paperwork confirming the switch was successful and began being charged by my new energy supplier.

However, I only recently noticed that npower continued to take payments from me every month. So effectively they’ve been taking money from me for a service they are not providing.

I contacted them a month ago and they said they would look into it but have yet to get back to me. I’m in the middle of writing an email about it and wanted some advice on what I should write.

Obviously I’d expect them to rectify the mistake and refund my payments, but part of me feels like I should charge them interest for keeping my money as well as Andre for the hassle caused. I feel like I’ve been mugged and am really annoyed that they don’t seem to have taken this seriously.

Lesson learnt - always check that direct debits are cancelled.

I’d appreciate any advise from wiser heads on what they think is a sensible course of action here.

Thanks in advance for your help

Write a letter headed COMPLAINT - not phone or email.

Keep to the facts - a/c number, address.

You really should have picked this error up over 12 months ago.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Thanks for the advice. Yeah I defo should have picked it up sooner.

I’m in the middle of writing an email but was specifically wondering about if I should try to demand a fee/interest and if so how much?

    Thanks again

As per Robin9's advice - WRITE don't email - and don't demand anything - just keep to the facts and ask for a gesture of goodwill as they should have closed the account correctly.
  • Thanks! I’ll do that.

Out of curiosity why is it better to write a letter than email? Does it not just go to the same people?

    Thanks again :)

I see no evidence from your posts to support this allegation that npower have overcharged you.
Although I accept you may have overpaid npower

Any overpayment will be reflected as a credit on your account, and this should normally be settled once the final bill has been produced.

gravers007 - don't cancel the DD. npower will refund with those details.

  • Hi Vicky,

I emailed you with details of my issue at the email on your account, but have not heard anything back. Please could you give me an estimate of when I can expect a response.

    Thanks
  • Hi Wavelets,

Unfortunately not, they have overcharged me. As per my phone conversation with their staff in October, the meter was not registered with them (as per the central database), however they were still billing me for it. So effectively i was paying for my power with them and with my new supplier.

Thanks for taking the time to respond

Do you 100% know that both gas and electric were switched?

I could check your electric if you PM me your meter serial (or address, but serial is best) (do not if you don't feel comfortable doing so). As for the gas I don't have access to such systems. The "who is my supplier?" numbers may help but they often insist on going with address rather than serial (address's can be odd and confusing).

On the address thing. Do you live at an esaily confused address. Such as flats?

It is kind of off to be billed after you leave. Did you get a final bill or chase for one?
