It is exceedingly complicated and full of potential pit-falls.

Before buying in Spain (or any other country) find out all the pitfalls.
Agents are dishonest, developers are dishonest, lawyers are not all good. You have to find and use a good lawyer yourself (not one advised by the agent or developer).
On the face of it there are legal requirements, in Spain - they do not adhere to them.
The charges on transfering the money are minor when you are risking loosing it all.
British financial organisations should be persuaded to give a fact sheet to everyone who wants to transfer a moderate or large sum to Spain.
But, until they do, look at the web pages run by British Expatriots and take good notice of the advice given. Make sure you read the nasty stuff as well as the good stuff.

Because this is the only thread you find when looking for buying in Spain. Hopefully anyone else looking will find what I hope is good advice. (I had just been reading another sad story on Eye on Spain).
What would be great is if some organization like MSE started a campaign to get Banks to follow my advice in the second to last sentence.
There are far too many Brits loosing all, or most of their money, when they buy their dream in Spain.
Another story is that there are also many who avoid the pitfalls but find they cannot afford the overheads and end up selling cheaply because agents advise them that it is a good investment and lettings will pay the overheads and make a profit
