Buying a house in Spain?

I’m looking into buying a villa or house in Spain, for roughly 200-250k mortgage free. As a Uk resident who will ultimately be moving and going to reside in it after purchase, does anyone know roughly how simple or complex purchasing property is in Spain. I’ve got a lot of experience with solicitors and the buying and selling in UK , but any tips on buying in Spain, will be appreciated.

Check out some of the expat forums too.0

Wrong place.
Plenty of specialist Spanish/expat sites.0 -
A relative of mine owned an apartment in Spain. It was complex, needed a local lawyer, and a lot of hassle (he's sold). I do though also know two other people who have Spanish apartments who don't seem to be having to much issue with their apartments so maybe my relative was unlucky.
I suggest you find a more specialist forum and start there, expecting one of your mainnneeds to be finding the right local legal representation.0 -
That investment approximately equates to thousands of holidays all over the world! But I do realise you say you will live there. Beware the Brexit factor anyway, no one knows about that.
Just in case you are unable to Google.....

We did it in 2009 and then sold and bought another in2014.
Find a well respected Abogado (solicitor). Do not use the one the estate agent recommends. He will then put you in touch with the “Notary Public” who will sign the deeds.
Expect around 10 thousand euros of charges on top of the property cost.
You will need to get an NIE from the town hall. This is like our National Insurance Number and is required for just about all dealings with officials.
You will also need an account with a Spanish Bank.0 -
It is really easy to buy in Spain. No issues with chain, gazumping or gazundering to worry about.
Depending on where you buy there will be taxes, solicitors and notary fees to pay. Budget for circa 12% of the purchase price. Usually you are required to pay a non refundable deposit.
Check out the title deeds (escritura) carefully and get an Abogado to handle the purchase.
If you have not lived in Spain, I would advise that you rent before you buy. What seems like a great holiday location, may not seem so appealing after a month in residence."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Thank you for the advice. Personal experiences are helpful and any things to look out or watch out for are helpful. I’ll definitely hire a Abogado , my aunt lives there so hopefully she can guide me in a few recommendations,0

Where about in Spain are you thinking of locating?
Please be advised, it is not common for a survey. It is up to you to check for defects and scrutinise the paperwork. Beware when buying property with illegal extensions. Many Brits ignore the rules in Spain. http://www.moraira-info.com/Articles/Spain-Illegal-Building.htm"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Thinking of looking in Palma, if it is not common to have the Survey done, then how would you be aware of illegal extensions?0

It is exceedingly complicated and full of potential pit-falls.
The real question however, is why on earth you would want to? If you ever needed to sell you are likely to have problems doing so. Also, rents in Spain are way cheaper than they are in the UK whereas property prices are not a lot lower. The economics just don't make sense.0
