Nope, can't see any "mauling"... And the replies seem to be consistent with here.
I was surprised when I read that on pepipoo too.
I see no mauling of the op in this thread.
    Very odd.

Edit: Some dodgy post by a couple of posters though . . .

oh and Adrian your thanking Andy through the forums like a child looking for approval its making me sick.
Well, it's self inflicted sickness as the only way to see who is thanking who is to make a conscious decision to click on the "Show me" tab. Don't look and it can't affect you.

It's a bit like people complaining that they find Frankie Boyle offensive but still decide to watch the TV shows that he is appearing on.
  • OP, can you confirm if it was ever taxed and insured after you bought it? I’m wondering if it was a case of the insurance was cancelled because the direct debit didn’t go through, because the bank account was frozen. Possibly same with the tax?

I would go in, apologise, and explain why this has happened. You made a mistake due to the stress of the bereavement and didn’t realise that the car needed sorting.
  • Sorry for the late reply, I'm just going to go and just take it in the chin, to answer the question about the tax and mot, the dealer I got the car from had z there was tax and mot on it at the moment, I honestly didn't realise the DVLA didn't make u aware of these running out anymore, I don't know very much but I can remember getting notices about these before, no reminders came, I'm fully willing to take the punishment. Thank u for all replys, really appreciate them.

Tax is cancelled as soon as the registered keeper is changed. You have to purchase new tax yourself. Dealers no longer sell cars with "x amount" of tax on them.

Traders can sell cars with tax on them. But they're effectively applying (and paying) on the new keepers behalf rather than transferring any remaining tax.

    Q. Can car dealers continue to tax vehicles for customers on their behalf?

    A. Yes, by using V5C/2, either online at https://www.gov.uk/tax-disc using the V5C/2 of the V5C, by telephone on 0300 123 4321, or at a PO branch that deals with vehicle tax.

A motor trader is still able to tax the vehicle on your behalf.

OP....check your paperwork for buying the car, does it make any mention of Vehicle Excise Duty (aka road tax)?

I'd still advise at least an initial appointment with a solicitor - if you can't afford to potentially lose your licence then you really can't afford not to get professional advice. Just make sure you take as much paperwork with you as you can.

Indeed. I should really have said "x amount" of tax left on it. It's new tax.

That was incidental to my point though as the op didn't make it clear if the vehicle was sold with new tax or sold with the belief that tax was "left" on it. I took it the op meant the latter.

A good and fair point. Although if that is the case, the dealer shouldn't have told the OP there is tax on it if it was under a trade policy (remaining tax no longer transfers to dealers either) as the VED isn't on the car, its on the trade licence.
