Thanks. Yes, Sipgate VOIP will work over mobile data as well as WiFi, but many people will turn off mobile data when outside the EU.
There are a number of different apps you can use with Sipgate. I'm using Voiper.
I have bought a local sim when abroad for data and then use a dual sim phone with my UK sim just for texts and take calls using the voip service which operates on the data from the local sim.
I also forward my uk mobile number to the Sipgate number and it only takes the minutes from my allowance of my UK sim card as it’s a 01xx number.0 -
Interesting
So you can call the UK when overseas cheapply?0 -

Yes, as long as you have an internet connection you can make and receive calls. The sipgate basic residential service is currently (01/07/2016) only available to residents of the UK.
It should be possible to make and receive VoIP calls from anywhere there is a suitable internet connection available.

Looks interesting, thanks
How would I use this if overseas?
If registered in the UK, would I be able to make call to the UK while overseas, using wifi?
Is that all I need?
While abroad I can get a Skype account to call the UK, very cheap and unlimited. the call quality is reasonable.

If you’re abroad you wouldn’t be able to sign up unless you have someone in the UK who will allow you to use their address as Sipgate post an activation code to the address you sign up with, which has to be in the UK.
Once signed up and verified there are no restrictions on actual use that I am aware of, at least none I have encountered in use.0 -
I am travelling for a year so changed to FreedomPop. It costs around £3 per month.
I bought a local sim here for my phone but use the FreedomPop app to call the UK over voip and people can phone me using my existing UK number.0 -
That's very interesting, thanks.
Can people call you on your FreedomPop number on the app, or do you need to have the sim in your phone to receive calls?
I usually use Skype to call the UK, but sometimes find the quality not so good.
Would the quality of the call using this and VOIP be better quality than Skype calls?
