DVLA Late Licensing Penalty

Hi
Just wanted others to be aware. I lost my V5 document and reapplied to DVLA with £25.00 fee for a new one. Once received, I applied for road tax on (Thurs) 26 July 2018. I received a Late Licensing demand letter from DVLA on the following Monday or Tuesday ie around 30 July / 01 August. As I knew I'd submitted an application, I disregarded the penalty demanding £40.00 (stupidly in this case, as DVLA letter was dated 23 July). With no further correspondence from DVLA, I received a letter from Advantis Credit in September demanding £80.00. I've now written to DVLA explained this crossing of letters, but of course they're not accepting my explanation and are demanding £80.00. Difficult for me as I'm a student nurse and low income etc. I'm putting this out there as a warning to others - if you receive a DVLA demand letter just after you've applied for road tax pay the £40.00!! DVLA are gonna get you for £80.00 if you don't.:(

When you applied for the replacement V5C, you could have taxed the vehicle at the same time. The V62 form explains how.

So you received the replacement V5C and taxed the car on 26/7, then received a penalty for taxing it late on 30/7 (dated 23/7)... When had the old tax run out? The end of June? Earlier? So you were nearly a month late in taxing it...0 -
Plus of course the vehicle can be taxed with the reference number on the tax reminder, no need to have the V5c.0
