Car repairs advice

Hi

I'm after some advice if possible.

Basically my car went in for some work last Monday and during the repairs they cracked my cylinder head. They have now nearly finished fixing this mistake and say it "should" be ready tomorrow.

They provided me with a courtesy car late Thursday last week. They are charging me for the original repairs only.

My question though is I had to take last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday off of work because I had no way of getting there. I start work at 5am and buses don't start running until 6am where I live, and a taxi would of cost 15 pound, which I couldn't afford.
Work let me take it as emergency holiday but were very unhappy with me because I was suppose to be covering my Manager and as a result have been given a verbal warning. I feel like because I had to take 3 days holiday I have now lost 3 days from my allowance and have lost out and am now not in the best place at work.

Should I seek from the garage to be compensated for the lost holidays, bus fares to and from the garage?

I fully understand things go wrong with cars but I just feel if the garage had been more honest and not tried to fudge the car (They tried to silicone seal the crack in the cylinder block) a courtesy car could have been given on Tuesday. It is a large chain of garages for context.

I just feel like I've lost out.

I'd be more upset with your work for lack of reasonable flexability to be honest. (Yes I know they do not have to do anything, but I'd be looking for a new job).

Yep fully understand that and have raised with senior ops manager.
Other people get understanding. But there argument is that at my level I shouldn't be doing that. First time anything like that has happened in nearly 10 years of working there!

It sounds like the garage are doing the right thing sorting your car properly, I think you would be pushing it for anything more from them.

Your work on the other hand sound like !!!!!.

Yeah I didn't really know whether to take it further with the garage. Was just a bit annoyed that they tried to just do a quick fix with the silicone sealant and didn't admit what went wrong until 2 days after car was suppose to be fixed

Mate to be honest you should have just got the taxi to work for 3 days £15x3=£45, im sure if you asked a familt member or a goodmate to lend it just for 3 days then you would have paid them back by the end of the week, this is the reason why everone bangs on about having a small emergency fund in place so you can dip into it when you need to

i dont think the garage is at fault yes they messed up and they fixed the problem at no cost to you which is right, this is life and things dont always work like clock work unfortunately, this is why i have a small pedal bike just in case i need it if i dont have access to a car

start to save a little as a small fund to cover anything like this in the future, after 10 years of working at a place and they getting thier knickers in a twist because you took 3 days off.... well just goes to show we are all just a number and not really valued, you could have also started work after 6am when the buses started running say if you got there at 7am its better to be 2 hours late for 3 days than not go at all if the company really is so uptight about days off
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

My emergency fund was the fund to fix the car in the first place!
Yeah get what you're saying mate.

I'll just collect the car and leave it at that I think.

    Thanks for the advice all

And buy a cheap bike for emegencies
  • Hmm Your employer isnt so understanding to issues beyond your control then?
If this is their standards you would fully expect them to issue everyone else with the same treatment when it comes time that their vehicle is in for repairs and that repair (as 95% of them do) run over due to unforseen problems. So youd fully expect the person who issued you with the verbal warning to get their just deserts when its their turn.

Personally i would raise a grievence with the company and go down the formal complaints process (all the while looking for a new job) against who ever was on a power trip in thinking he could get away with issueing a verbal warning and piddling on your leg at the same time because he thought he had the power to do so.

As for the garage, well next time the neighbouring competitor garage would get my buisiness and thats simply for this garage trying to seal a cracked head with silicone, never mind causing the crack in the first place, they may aswell tried to plug a leaking dam with tissue paper!

So you have placed a value of <£15 on each of those holiday days.
You would rather take a day off than pay £15.

You could very reasonably have asked them to cover the taxi fare. Anything more than that, and you're failing in your basic duty to mitigate your losses.
