I have never really worked out why they started offering this but as far as I am concerned, everyone should aim to pay by card ...... NOT compulsory but obligatory for the majority.
debit card fees tend(ed) to be pretty fixed, it didnt cost the supermarket anymore to put through £1 or £100, banks tend to charge for depositing money for businesses. By giving cash back the supermarkets were able to save bank fees, as they deposited less money0
