Issue with getting a Vodafone contract after signing up for broadband

I signed up for Vodafone broadband two weeks ago, and shortly after tried to sign up for Vodafone mobile. The broadband went through ok, but the mobile contract didn't.

This is a bit strange as I've never failed a credit check before, but a little digging showed that because I'd just set up one Vodafone contract, I needed to wait a week until I can sign up another.

Has anyone else heard of this? And will the first attempt failing be any reason for the second attempt to fail, if we assume that I would have otherwise passed a credit check?

To add another layer to it - I'm trying to sign up through the Mobiles.co.uk deal, so I can't give Vodafone a call and talk it over with them on the phone as they're not the ones offering cashback.

[Obviously I could have failed a credit check for any old reason unbeknown to me - I'm just trying to work out if trying again on Mobiles.co.uk is likely to result in an auto-fail again and a hit to my credit file].

  • Vodafone make you wait 90 days between mobile contracts, not one week. Nothing to do with the credit check as such. Maybe it's the same with 2 different products. Mobiles.co won't be able to circumvent it.

I couldn't say what your chances are with another contract application. But if it's for a phone included, have you priced up buying the same handset outright, SIM-free, plus the cheapest SIM-only contract for your usage requirements?

If it costs less, but you don't have the cash available, consider applying for a suitable credit card for the purpose, 0% for purchases if possible. Don't worry too much about minor effects to your credit file.

Ah man, that's even worse. No worries, thanks for confirming my doubts.

They give mobile contracts out like candy, so I'm extremely confident my credit history has nothing on it that would stop a new contract (got a mortgage last year and haven't missed a payment on anything in close to a decade).

Guess Vodafone will lose out (albeit kind of small fry for them).

    This was SIM-only.
