Agreed tenancy renewal...no new contract yet

Hi,
My 1 year AST ends on 14/11, the letting agent emailed asking if I wanted to renew the contract.

I replied to say I'd like a 6 month extension if possible, they replied to say the LL agreed to this & we'd get our renewal agreement soon (they did say it would probably be after the end date as they're busy).

Now I realise I should have probably gone onto a rolling contract rather than ask for the 6 months.

I've just found a potential house to buy and wonder if my emails to the agency now have me tied into the 6 month agreement, or would it only apply after I've signed the new agreement?
Wondering how to have a life & not rack up more debts...

To be honest it’s unlikely you’d complete before 6 months

    As comms69 says.

However, no " they replied to say the LL agreed to this & we'd get our renewal agreement soon" implies that the contract is not binding till signed by both parties.

If they had simply said "yes" with no caveat, that could have been a binding verbal contract.

As you have neither received nor signed the new contract, just wait till 14/11 and move to a SPT.

    * Ending/renewing an AST: what happens when a fixed term ends? How can a LL or tenant end a tenancy? What is a periodic tenancy?

Thanks, the owner of the potential house has said they want to move quickly as she's already moved out. Agent possibly daftly said "She just wants rid asap" when I viewed it.

I'll just hang on til the contract turns up & deal with the timescales then. I've also just noticed that it does say 'Subject to Contract' on the start of the email response from them - so it does look like it isn't binding yet.

    Thank you :)

When the contract arrives (if it does) then you could just 'lose' it (dog ate it, lost in post, partner used it when loo-paper ran out, whatever).
    On 14th you'll be on a SPT.

Good stuff, but even then I wouldn’t expect to complete quickly searches, surveys, etc take time.

Even with no chain I would be surprised; unless buying cash
