No idea. But both the local towns are around 2,000 population - but cover much larger catchment areas, lots of villages. The nearest bigger town IS that 40 mile round trip.

Edit: Ah, a quick google says RBS promised never to shut the last bank in town if it happened to be theirs, but they dropped that a while back. And there wasn't an RBS in either town anyway.

RBS are closing the last bank in Inveraray - no post office either.

The energy companies are under a lot of pressure to roll out smart meters to their customers. Many are therefore offering the best tariffs to customers who have a new smart meter fitted. Make sure you benefit from one of those offers.

but it’s a big conspiracy! They are spying on our energy use :rotfl:
  • I had a smart meter fitted by eon 3 years ago when I first got my house. Then I switched to Sainsburys (British Gas) and it became a "dumb" meter again, last year I switched back to eon and despite them fitting it almost 2 years before it was still a dumb meter as they told me they would have to fit a new one as I was on a new tariff! Told them not to waste my time as they were still fitting Gen 1 smart meters. Currently in the middle of switching to British Gas and hoping they are now fitting Gen 2, if not I wont bother.

Quite why they started the whole rollout when Smart Meters are only "Smart" for a year until you switch is beyond me.

TBH it was pretty nice to be able to see usage as you were going (Pence per hour on the electric was scary sometimes) but until they stop fitting Gen 1 meters they will no doubt be replacing in 5 years time it's all a massive waste of money (ours because we're paying for it all through tariffs) and time. Taking a day off work to save me reading the meter once a quarter is a bit pointless...
  • Unfortunately our Gas sm died yesterday (after 6 months... never sent a single read to the supplier) and the gas was cut off. no boiler or hob.
The grid wont help because the meter is supplied and fitted by the supplier, and you have to contact them, during their business hours; which means if it had happened out of office hours we are in cold.
Anyway they came and replaced the meter and told that the they cant get any old (final) readings because it is dead.
we didn't had any gas for nearly 14 hours.

If this makes you feel better please carry on installing one ;)

Hello Angry_kittens and sorry to lose you.

I take your point and this is something we've been working on. Not much use to you now, I know, but we've started rolling out the new SMETS2 meters. These will let customers change supplier without losing their smart features. They're not available everywhere yet and we're continuing to work on this until we're in a position to offer them to all our customers.

Additionally, many of the SMETS1 meters we've already installed will be updated remotely so they're managed in the same way as SMETS2. This includes being able to work and communicate following a change of supplier. Where possible, we're looking to have this done by the end of next year.

Sorry this is all a bit too late for you Angry_kittens.

Hello, tenant and bill payer here, I had smart meters installed today. The engineer had to turn off the gas boiler to do his work on the gas meter, and when he finished he couldn't turn it on again. He said it was a fault with the boiler, not really a result of the meter being fitting, and could have happened any time.

The landlord says I will have to pay for the repair if it's a result of the meter being fitted and then try to claim it back from National Grid Smart (who did the work) as a private dispute. I'm not sure how we can really determine the cause of the fault. I'm no expert but it appears unlikely you can blame the engineer for turning it off. I hadn't previously turned the boiler off/on once since moving in a few months ago. Any advice?
  • @AdrianC - Yeah I think I pay a tad over the odds to do it this way, but I'm ok with that. It's worth it to me to be hassle free.
I'm with Lloyds and so far I've never been too far from a branch yet. Watch them start dropping like flies now I've said that! I'll perhaps have to change my tune if/when that happens...

@Money - I take your point, it's so convenient when you need it. Lots of little bills rather than a few larger ones makes sense too.

@Robin9 - We had a meter reader come until recently. We also did the cheque thing 'til they started charging to process it, hence paper bills.

It's good we have the choice though. As long as they leave us a few banks and post offices :)
