My son 's Sony MP3 player is broken and he has lost his music album. Any idea how to recover them? He is thinking of sending it for repair and it is going to cost load. He has bought a new one but wants to recover the lost music album. Thanks

Realistically a repair is going to cost more than the unit is probably worth and personally I wouldn't entertain this avenue for the sake of one album but decision is up to you.
How is it broken? Does it do anything? Does the computer go bing bong when you plug it into a USB port? If the computer can see it and the internal drive (assuming it has its own storage and not an SD card) you may be able to get the files back.
Also remember that if he bought the album from Amazon originally you can get the tunes back through the website.0 -
Good advice if only he will listen!0

Also little tip - try not to keep music on just one device, especially a portable device like a phone or mp3 player! Unless of course you can just redownload it from iTunes/Amazon if you bought it from there.
Try plugging the device into a computer to see if it recognises it as has been said above.
Otherwise - it's a lesson to keep back ups.0 -
How did he get the music onto the mp3 player in the first place?
Do you genuinely mean one album (i.e. an album/CD/LP by one artist) or do you mean the whole music library on the player?0 -
CI mean the whole music library on the player. His Samsung laptop has now packed up . The person who repaired it before did save some files on an external drive. Might try to see whether they can be recovered. Thanks0

This is going to be expensive for him, but perhaps also a good lesson to ensure that anything important is backed up securely in future.0

How did it get damaged? How much does he fancy himself as computer forensics guy?
I can give you some tips and suggestions, depending on what the failure is. Obviously this is about data recovery though, not a long term repair.0 -
I know this was a while back, but just in case. His Samsung laptop has now packed up
If the files might be on the laptop, get that recovered. It'll be a lot cheaper and likely to succeed that trying to get them off a mp3 player. Much can be done to retrieve files from laptop hard drives, so don't be put off if previous attempts have failed or only been partially successful.0 -
Take the hard drive from the laptop, if it still is a working drive, and connect it in a USB caddy to another PC
Explore the files therein to see if there's mp3s from his library.
Use Windows Search or a disk display utility like WinDirStat0
