Selling a car for someone else

Wondering if anyone can give me some opinions / thoughts.

My father has finally decided to give up driving and has asked me to sell his car for him (he doesn't do internet and isn't keen to try and organise the sale himself).

He's signed the logbook - I plan on advertising it for a couple of weeks and going to webuyanycar if I get no luck. The price isn't desperately important, we just want it gone (a 57-plate Fiesta) .

My question is, if you saw me (not the seller of the car) would it put you off buying the car on suspicious grounds? I can get the ownership transferred to me but don't really want to wait that long to get a new V5.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

  • Sell it with your number but from his house, the photos etc will match and they can see the address etc is correct.

A 57 plate Fiesta with a years MOT(?) will sell very easily.
Get a quote from WBAC. I have used them twice, on both occasions I was pleasantly surprised at how much they offered and how quick and painless it was to sell.
    Advertise on Gumtree / eBay
Take it to your nearest car auction site. Small cars are very popular and often sell for good money at auction.

maybe have a photocopy of your dad's passport or licence to hand. Many genuine cars are sold by family members unfortunately there are those posing as too.
I sold my 90 yr old aunts car with no issues, but don't have that common a surname.
57 plate Fiesta should sell easily if clean and in good order.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
Try ebay auction with no reserve but a start price just below your minimum.

Thanks to everyone who’s replied so far. I’ve got a valeter coming on Friday so will start selling after that. I’ll try it for a fortnight then go to WBAC if no joy. Dad lives less than a mile away so I could even use a test drive (with me at the wheel) to prove ownership - I can also get his driving licence but his passport has long expired!

When my Mum decided similar, I took the viewings at mine and completed the final paperwork at hers.

It can be stressful dealing with time wasters, tyre kickers and those who make an appointment and don't show up …. Good luck

If you Just want it Gone, why not just go strraight to WBAC, for the sake of a couple of hundred quid, which will probably cost you in time and valeting and stress, I really couldnt be bothered and it would be gone in the same day....
    One happy dad,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    One happy dad,

This, it's the easiest approach and done without any of the hassle.

If you want to sell it yourself it'd be best to arrange for them to view it at your fathers house (which is the address on the V5), and combine that with an ID of the same surname and access to the house should be sufficient for most people.

I would refrain from mentioning on the advert that you are selling it on behalf of someone else. I personally like to avoid those ads because everytime I've visited a car sold under those circumstances, there's always been massive details missed with the excuse "well it's my mate Dave's car". It probably mean I now regularly miss perfectly good motors, but those few experiences put me off.
