I’m looking to purchase a second car for the other half. I’ve seen quite a few newer car models with service history, but Space Shuttle mileage. Would you advise to buy or stay clear based on the mileage?
For example (there are other brands and models, not necessarily company owned with similar)
Lexus NX300h FSH one company owned with 154,000 miles 15 plate £13,989

That's a thousand miles a week, likely done on petrol, and the battery pack will still be fine.
If you are only going to put on a couple of thousand a year then it could be a good buy, Toyota always used to make good cars, you'd hope that would translate across to their posh badge.
Remember the warranty will be used up at 150,000 though, so you are on your own, with a posh badged car to repair if anything does break, Toyota spares are expensive, I'd bet Lexus ones are even more so.
£14,000 seems a lot for a 3 year old car though tbh....I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science )0 -
I would buy on the condition of the car and the service history up to about 70,000 miles for a newer car. I wouldn't pay £14k for a 3 year old car with in excess of 150,000 on the clock. Have they taken the minicab thing off the top or do you get that for free??0

Most I've ever bought is 90,000 miles on a 3 year old car and it was for sale for 1/4 of its new price.
Just less than half price on a 3 year old car with 154,000 miles on I think I'd not bother with. Yes its a Lexus and yes it is a hybrid but if that's the kind of money you're looking at for a car with that mileage on I'd go look at something else. 154,000 miles is something you buy which is several years old for a couple of grand, not £14k.0 -
Mileage wont be an issue, but expect wear and tear items to be worn..
I bet they don't fetch anywhere near that at auction. Possibly worth going to an auction for one of those. Just check all costs you need to add on.
Thats the top end of the mileage i generally buy at, would i spend £14k on one not a chance. Much prefer the sub 5 year old mondeo with less miles and for £2300. Had that 5/6 years and sold it with 174k miles where the new owner stuck 60k on it in just 2 years. They resold it and it just passed another MOT with no advisories.
The car i traded in for that in 2009 has also just been MOTd with over 190,000 miles. Not bad for a petrol car. Probably should have kept that one.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
So long as it's been regularly serviced the mileage shouldn't be a great concern.
50k per year would suggest that most of its life was spent on the motorway which is nowhere near as demanding on a lot of parts as smaller mileage around town would be.
You do need to consider how long you are going to keep the car, if it's just for a couple of years you may struggle to sell it on but if you intend to keep it longer term it may be a good choice.
Personally I would do as others suggest and head to a local auction. At a guess 10k should see you in a similar vehicle.0 -
Just because its high mileage doesnt mean its had a lot of motorway work.
Spotted a few cars in the 200k range that are on the coast miles away from any motorways. I would expect those to just be lots and lots of shorter journeys. Probably the same runs week in week out with locals doing their shopping etc.
Mum lives on the E. Coast, when she goes out its the same driver each week.
Used car is always a mystery. Cross your fingers and touch wood when you payCensorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Its a Lexus so it will be well built.
But If I were looking to buy a 150,000 mile car for that kind of price, I would be also paying a mechanic to check it over with me first.0 -

The OP is looking at a 3yr old car with 150k on, if it's been used 5 days a week that's about 200 miles a day on average. That's not going to be a few trips to the shop.
I do agree that on an older car high miles don't necessarily point towards motorway miles.0 -
With that amount of money and if high mileage does not worry you I would be looking at a 5 year old Mercedes S Class.
Expensive when new but depreciate like a Teresa May popularity score and are bullet proof.
5 years old with up to 200,000 miles on the clock would tell me that it has at least another 50,000 miles to go of trouble free motoring so long as it has a full service history
As with all old cars a service history and the lack of rust is all important.0 -
A Yellow lawn and a red car, not for me
I will be soon changing my car, I will look for high mileage but would prefer to stick to under 100k.
I would be keeping the car for a least 7 years (hopefully) and would rather have higher mileage than and older car.
I have taken my current car from 98K to 150K and not had any real issues.0
