This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning all :)

Not a good nights sleep here. Its my own fault I went up at 8.30 ...way too early so then woke at 10 and that was it. Fireworks going off till 2am didn't help either ...who actually thinks thats OK I wonder and now another 2 nights of it  Hope all the furry friends are OK

Yesterday I did do some bits around the house but I also napped a bit which wont help my night sleep either. Need to try and stay awake today which will be a challenge as I am shattered already. Anyway moan over.

Had a steak and kidney pie last night (not mine :o) and I paid the price for it when it became a game of hunt the meat. Back to HM for me

Today I will have something from the freezer no idea what yet

Sorry for a misery post Ill shake down and post more positively later :)

Hope everyone has a good Sunday :A

  • Good morning, and thanks Nelski for starting off. It seems damp outside, don't know what the forecast is.

I've been awake for hours, worrying about various things - there seem to be quite a few of us on here with the same problem, waking at ridiculous o'clock.

Our bathroom is finished at last, thank heavens, and looks really nice, we're pleased with it. The living room could do with a coat of paint, but it's not desperate, I think I'll wash the curtains and do a deep clean, that will do till the spring.

Yesterday was just shopping and housework. We went to a shopping centre a few miles away because Dh needed something at B&*. We then went on to the the large A*da there, it was packed and absolutely hellish, so we got what we wanted and exited as quick as we could.

Haven't seen any family this weekend, though we didn't expect to, I knew Ds and family were busy, and Dd and family were in their caravan, getting a last weekend in there. The site will close soon till spring. Ds in Oz has sent some pics of their boys in the pool, it's coming into summer there of course.

I don't know what delights today holds, I really should tackle that ironing, the pile is growing nicely.

Glad that Holly seems to be doing all right, and it's good to see TA posting. Thinking of Poppy, and -Taff, and anyone else who is sad, worried or poorly.

Hope everyone has as good a day as they can.

    Take care folks
  • Morning folks and thanks NELSKI. It feels very mild again and forecast to reach 11/12 deg.

I had a rubbish night too. Woke about 3.00 reliving the past few months and never got back to sleep again.

No fixed plans for today, other than making the pan of celery soup which was going to happen yesterday but didn't. Lots of neglected jobs on hold too awaiting the enthusiasm/energy to tackle them. DD and DS will also be popping in at some point checking up on me!

The freezers need a good sort out too with stuff getting shoved wherever there's a space, meaning I can never find what I am looking for. And who is to blame? That'll be me then!

Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) as always for all the poorlies, sad and worried. Take care all xx

    Good morning everyone :hello:
I am another one who didn't get much sleep but our visitors have left now so will catch up later on.

Steve had a lovely birthday, he was so pleased with his gifts and even more pleased to see his Mum and stepDad. It has been too long between visits especially as his parents are getting old now. It would be lovely to go and see them next year for a change.

Lee is up and baking a coffee and walnut cake for his dad as he was a bit upset yesterday and didn't feel able to make his cake. The kitchen smells lovely already.

Steve will be cooking a roast beef dinner for all of us later on. I will make a lemon meringue pie for dessert so that will be nice. The house is still tidy from our grand clean up and even the washing basket is empty.

Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to and sending out hugs for the poorly and worried. Take care xx
  • Good Morning, Oldstylers  - looks like a dull, damp and murky start to the day outside :(.

Nelski - thanks for starting the thread. Sorry to read that you had a lousy night's sleep and an unsuccessful S&K Pie last night :(. Horrible when you get something like that with hardly any filling apart from gravy :(. Hope you manage to avoid the 'snooze fairy' today and get a much better sleep tonight :).
ScarlettRibbons - I HATE those 3.00am worry sessions and was very prone to them before retirement. For some reason - even though I knew it to be untrue - I used to get myself convinced that everybody wanted me out of my job. Thinking that the tenants in my Housing Scheme all wanted me gone / Housing Management didn't like the way I did my job / other Scheme Managers were queueing up to step into my place. In actuality, when I retired, nobody would take over my Scheme because it was a difficult one to Manage with 96 tenants in a very rough part of town. I DO hope you manage to find something to work for you in chasing those 'midnight demons' away. 'Ironing' - what's THAT ;). My daughter doesn't even know why I possess an ironing board - cos that, and the iron, never see the light of day :rotfl:.
TA - know what you mean about your freezer - mine's the same right now. I started a 'Freezer Inventory' last week - but only managed to do the Fridge/Freezer shelves inside my flat. The REAL problem has to be the chest freezer in the porch . OH is rather prone to NOT stacking items neatly to make the most of the space . Your Celery Soup sounds very  - do you have a particular recipe, or does it vary each timel?
dumpling - mmm the aroma of Coffee & Walnut Cake to wake up to - how lovely :j. Sounds like you've had a great weekend so far - with another good day today. Enjoy :j!

I don't often buy pies due to being Coeliac, but yesterday - at the Free From Food Fair - I found these at the Food Fair and I know they've got a good reputation - so hears hoping ;). They don't come cheap, but I came away with a Steak & Ale, a Cauliflower, Kale and Stilton, a Dark Chocolate & Salted Caramel Tart, and two Pork Pies for £10 instead of £12.50.

I'm going back there today because there's some cookery demonstrations and talks that I want to listen to; didn't get the chance to watch any demonstrations due to having 'The Bobster' with me.

Taking my own food with me this time - yesterday's choice at the small cafeteria was rather dire :( - the samples were far better BUT you can't be greedy with those to 'fill-up on'.

Have a good Oldstyle Day. ((((HUGS)))) to all who want or need them - and stay warm and dry - luv Ollie xx

Good morning everyone, my visitor from a land far away arrived yesterday evening, by which time the house was gleaming and a meal was cooking. It was great to catch up with all our respective news and she's safely ensconced in the guest suite which is at the other end of this building of retirement flats, and gives her space and time for herself. She'll come down for breakfast at her own speed.

Today we're going to meet up with the other Sunday strollers after their walk, at a local garden centre which has a large cafe. My friend has arthritis in her back and hips, so isn't up to the walk, but it will be nice to introduce her to everyone at the cafe. Then we'll collect the rest of her belongings from the friend she was staying with previously, come back, drop everything off and have a rest.

I've booked dinner at a fab local eaterie which doesn't look much from the outside but uses local fresh food, beautifully cooked. I almost never eat out, so I'm really looking forward to this :)

Tomorrow we've a few practical errands to run on her behalf, then late afternoon I'm dropping her at her next port of call. She has a lot of people to see while she's in the country. This is her first trip home in eight years, so everyone is keen to see her.

So, a lovely couple of days for me, celebrating the joys of a long and easy friendship :). Love to our poorlies and carers and careworn. I hope wherever you are, you have the best day possible. xxx

Good morning all, sorry that so many are having difficulty sleeping, Nelski, TA, ScarletRibbons, Dumpling I hope that you can all have a quiet day to compensate a little.
Weemidgie your catch up with your friend sounds great, lovely that she still has so many friends here.
Ollie I am very envious of you attending the Food Show, I live too far in the sticks for such things, but love to read recommendations. I am not Coeliac, but Consultant suggested going GF to help my poor tum heal as I am probably Gluten Intolerant. It has helped a lot and I can eat some ordinary foods, but not too often. When I have some freezer space I may order a few of those savoury pies.

Have a lovely Sunday with lots of hugs and spoons.

    Morning everyone

Nelski - thanks for starting us off x

Hugs to those that want/need one x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

DH in the bath, I'm enjoying peaceful cuppa whilst on here, boys still in their pits. I'm with the not sleeping very well people, fell asleep on the sofa whilst watching tv, woke at 1am, took myself off to bed, then couldn't sleep and laid awake until 4-5am, was thinking of getting up but went to the loo then managed to go back to sleep and woke at 7.40am.

Dry with cloud here at the moment but seems quite mild.

Lunch today will be roast pork, roasties, mash, cauli cheese, carrots, broc, peas, HG sprouting broc (grown in our garden, will cut it this morning, wash it and straight in the pan -lovely), swede (just me), yorkshires and gravy.

Dinner last night was hot quiche, southern fried chicken, chips, salad, coleslaw, pickles.

Visited the parents yesterday afternoon as dad rang and asked if the boys could go round to help him put the cover on his caravan, we were going to visit this morning, but we all went yesterday, when we arrived mum had gone out and dad didn't know where she was, DH went to start looking, but fortunately she was on her way back and not far away. This is becoming a regular thing - dad doesn't want to upset her and so lets her go to do her own thing, but she's really not safe - we have all sorts of tracking stuff but that's only going to work if she takes a bag that any kind of device can be slipped into.

Today the menfolk will be trying to sort out the guttering on one side of the house, the end cap on this particular side has split, we have a new one, DH not able to go up the ladder, so DS1 will try, if he can't do it then I'll get in touch with the window cleaner as he's cleaned the guttering out for us in the past, so he may be able to help us out. Hopefully the guttering job won't take too long and can be done whilst I'm prepping and cooking the lunch.

Back to work tomorrow, why do the days' off seem to fly by so quickly.

    Keep safe and well x

Another her suffering from lack of sleep. I was tired as well after helping Crystal in their garden. We were picking up leaves and I cleared up all the leathery leaves that had fallen from the magnolia grandiflora trees. They have four trained up the front of their house, goodness knows how old they are, they have preservation orders on them.

We've decided to go away in the van for a couple of days this week but not too far. We had planned another week in Kent but with Steve being ill last week we'd shelved that.

I'm hoping to spend a little time in the loft and also to make the living room look habitable again.
  • Good morning all

Thank you for starting us off Nelski

Gentle hugs to anyone who needs/wants one

Another one not sleeping. Thinking about making changes to my will, pre paying for my funeral and leaving a letter for my dgs. Lots to think about, but I need to have everything in place. If anything happens to me before DH he would be lost and if I am left I will be totally alone.

Think I will go before I make everyone miserable.
