It was the EGR valve which the RAC man disconncted, and was still disconnected when son took the car to the new garage.

Thanks for your input. Hope your friend manages to sort out his car engine. Tip from us - don't take to BMW garage!

    Thanks,

I thought so by doing that he allowed it to stay closed, it seems to me from what i can tell that he will need a new egr valve but before he goes about that there is a very simple test to check if it is working correctly, i use my snap on to activate the egr and see if it opens and closes all the way so from 0% -100% as it could just be sticking and needing a good clean

but if it does need replacing the are not that much i think its around £150 ish if you shop around

    keep us updated

    Update.

Our son's car is running again, thank goodness.

The new garage did a full diagnostic for £70, and found that two of the injectors needed replacing. They also did a couple of other jobs, changed engine oil, and did a service. The charge came to about £900.

We had understood that BMW had already checked the injectors, but apparently it was only a basic check and it was going to cost extra to investigate further. They were also talking about charges of £500 plus to dismantle the engine.

The cost of £900 paid to the new garage seems reasonable, but altogether with the BMW garage he has paid around £2700. A lot of money to repair a 10 year old car!

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks for the update it seems like the £70 diag fee has paid off, the test they have done to check the injectors is fairly straight forward if you are good mechanic ive done them before its called a injector leakoff test... it a test to show which injectors out the 4 are back leaking more fuel than others over a set amount of time say 1 min of the engine running... the fuel is then messured and compared to what the manifactuer states it should be etc.... fairly easy to do

But he also could have saved a lot of money by buying used/recon injectors on the bmw i think they are £120 each recon so good as new on an exchange basis and to fit them providing the are not stuck is only a 1hrs labour so £240+£80 labour, plus about £150ish for a service come to about 400 -500 pounds (im mse so always shops around)

You are right £2700 on a ten yearold car is a lot but hopefully it should be fine form now on just tell him to be aware about the other 2 injectors as they could also fail assuming they are the original in the car

Thanks ratrace, your comments have been very helpful.

We would have expected that the BMW garage would have checked the injectors thoroughly before deciding on the new pump which they fitted. Whether the pump was necessary is hard to tell.

I will definitely pass on to son your comments, much appreciated.

Why service with BMW? Because, we know every part of your car, and have a range of car services designed to suit you. Our trained technicians are experts in your vehicle and ensure BMW Genuine Parts are used in any replacements, meaning you can drive away with peace of mind.

    Thanks fred246 for your input.

It would be interesting to know why this common problem of injectors being faulty, before being informed by the garage that it would cost another £80 + to thoroughly inspect them, also another £500 + to dismantle the engine!

The faulty injectors were picked up in a £70 diagnosis by the second garage, and repaired at a fraction of BMW's astronomical charges.

Is this supposed to be ironic?

My son definitely didn't drive away with peace of mind. The mechanic had to come out to start the car, and due to heavy smoke issuing from the exhaust he had to call out the RAC man.

    Definitely ironic, I would say!
