Car broken down, expensive repairs, still not working.

Thanks very much Tarambor for your valued information. We're very appreciative of your input. He does think that all of these checks have already been done by the garage.
BMW have decided that there is no problem with the injectors, and the next step is to strip down the engine, and look further.
My son had decided that due to the age of the car, it wasn't worth spending any more money on it, and went into the BMW garage this morning basically asking could they either tow the car back home, or ask the RAC to do so.
He spoke to someone at the garage, and they said that due to the 'mint' condition of the car, it was in much too good condition to scrap. It does look brand new, there isn't a mark on it. It seems crazy to even think of scrapping it.
They did suggest that the smoke might eventually clear, and suggested he call back next week to speak to the mechanic who was dealing with the car.
We will see what happens next week.
Thanks everyone for your help, much appreciated.0 -
Do you have any good independent BMW specialists in your area?
Do you know the exact model of the car?0 -
He thinks there may be an independent BMW specialist within about 10 miles of us, who seems to have a good reputation.
The car model is 123D Coupe.
Your information has given him food for thought.0 -
You can get an independent professionally qualified Inspection Engineer to check it out and produce a detailed report on its condition plus the cost of fixing it.
They do this all the time for insurers.0 -

Thanks neilmcl.
Apparently he has already checked out the website mentioned. Thanks for your help.0 -

Update - latest installment!
Our son went to the BMW garage at weekend, and spoke to the mechanic who had been dealing with his car. Basically, the checks mentioned above had been done, the next step was paying extra to do further checks on injectors, etc.
He decided the cost could go into £1000s and asked whether it would be possible to drive the car home. The mechanic thought the black smoke from the exhaust might clear, and he should be fine.
He wasn't!
He paid the garage £1800, and got into the car, which initially refused to start. The mechanic got it running, and off he set, with his dad following behind.
The engine kept making strange noises, smoke belching from the rear, and he decided to stop, and call the RAC again. He's becoming good friends with the local RAC men.
The RAC man disconnected something and followed him and his dad home.
He had a look at other cars, but decided to give the BMW another chance. There is a local garage who will do a full diagnostic for £70, and that is where the car is at present.
Will update later.0 -

We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

It was the EGR valve which the RAC man disconncted, and was still disconnected when son took the car to the new garage.
Thanks for your input. Hope your friend manages to sort out his car engine. Tip from us - don't take to BMW garage!0
