I suspect you're correct despite the fact that if I hadn't used the box I'd would have been there for hours, with a load of angry drivers queuing up behind me beeping their horns.

I'm sure it was a bumper day for Camden Council that Sunday.

Look at it the same way you pay for a toll road. You saved some time and pay the toll.

My argument would be that the only way to clear a junction was to use the box. The gridlock and confusion meant that for multiple light cycles the box was full of cars making it impossible to move.

The box is there to keep the junction clear so arguing you entered it to clear the junction doesn't really work. The fact that other cars also entered it when they shouldn't doesn't change that - but means they've probably received fines as well.

You should be ok if you were turning right (see Highway code extract below), I'd hope you'd also be ok if you'd entered to make space for an emergency vehicle to pass - but clearly they'll have photos so only an argument in a genuine case.

Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (download ‘Road markings’). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

With his spelling ('traveled' and 'offense') and use of terms such as you have quoted, I think (hope!) that the OP is almost certainly American.

Really? No amber lights where you live?

Yes, but they're just the bit in between, and I was trying to simplify. Thatt's the light cycleS that OP was referring to.
perhaps I should have used a few more of these in my previous response ...

Yes - question marks - well, you know. They look like you're confused...

    Huh?

How on earth does a winky smiley look like a question mark? (Unless there's something wrong with the device you're using to view this forum).

If you're referring to the ??? above the image then your sarcasm meter is well and truly b0rked to the point of not actually working. ;)

OH was at Shepherds Bush roundabout, a notorious, large, box junction in London not long ago, waiting at lights which changed in his favour and a space opened up in the lane on opposite side of the junction. He headed across the box for the space in the lane which he could see, only to watch a car in the adjoining lane pull over to nip into his target space, at which point when the traffic ground to a halt with no where for him to go. By then he was half way across and stranded. The lights opposite were green but the traffic had stopped and he was stuck.

So he did have an exit when he entered the junction but it closed up while he was crossing the box (it is a very large box.) So he had to pay up. Basically in London, if you get caught in a box junction for whatever reason, however valid, you have to pay up. There isn't really any appeal. Box junctions and similar traffic "calming" measures are less about traffic control in London than revenue raising devices for local councils.

Here is a typical West London money box box junction. In this case the lights let through more cars than can clear the junction while they are green. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2261734/Moneybox-junction-The-West-London-traffic-light-trap-rakes-2-7m-year.html

Erm.... you do realise that the times on bus lane signs are the times when you CAN’T use the bus lane, because the times shown are when the bus lane is in operation.
Probably why you got a fine and also noticed that nobody else was using it.

That was a reply to TuppenceWorth further up. No idea why it hasn’t quoted their reply.
  • I am aware of that. The specific times allowed for general traffic. ie it was outside the specified bus/cycle only times. Clear as mud?
