Esure car insurance modification questions

  • This one surely is a minefield. I would have thought it means modifications after the car was purchased. My son has just bought a 8 year old Audi A4 Avant S-line, and the person we bought it from said it has all the options on it that were possible, it does have a lot of kit on it. But how do we know what they were? Find a brochure from 2010 and see what extras the car has so we can tell the insurance company? Who would do that? And if you bought a 15 year old car that had been remapped but didnt know, how can you declare it?

For me its a potential insurance cop-out, there are covering their bottoms.

And in reality would they decline a claim because you didnt declare the car had heated seat as an option? What if you have non-OEM brake pads, is that a modification? Too much over thinking.

For me the car is only modified if anything has been changed to alter the performance/ looks of the car.

In the end they will pay out on a standard car of that age, if you then say 'but it had a full body kit' they will say bad luck, you didnt tell us, but if you did the premium will be twice the price, but we will still try to stiff you if we can if you claim.

Just my thoughts, if you dont agree I dont really care.

They come with standard tinting like any car that doesn’t have privacy glass. It looked like a greenhouse from outside as standard.

But as another poster said, most cars seem to have privacy glass on the side rear windows.... I think :D

So as I said, they come from the manufacturer with tinted windows.

I guess I have to answer to the best of my knowledge. Or I could ring them to clarify.

    Esures question is

‘A modification is any alteration or change to the manufacturer’s standard specification for your car, including optional extras fitted to the car when new by the vehicle manufacturer or dealer, which improves its value, performance, appearance or attractiveness to thieves’

If you tell them it’s say a 430d m sport, they will already know the Standard spec like pro nav or heated seats. They will already know it has a turbo charger. It’s common sense.

I suspect we're confusing 'normal' tinting, which must be almost universal, with drug-dealer type tinting.

I can't recall any car I've had in the past 30 years that came with plain untinted glass. The last one was probably a Cortina.
I accept all glass is tinted to some extent but what I'm referring to is the additional, optional privacy glass tinting that's offered as a factory option to the rear side and rear windows as well as extra sun shade tinting on windscreens.

I thought my post was clear (no pun intended) on this.

I brought a new 4 series in 2016 and at that time the pro nav and heated leather were standard fit items for the m sport- it was better equipped than the 3 series. I can’t find the earlier module brochures but I can’t imagine they changed much.

I didn’t tick any options for privacy glass and the rears are a lot darker than the front windows as well.

From what the op has posted I don’t think he has anything to declare
I have a 2016 1 series M Sport and at the time rear privacy glass, Pro Nav, heated seats were all optional extras. Some of these are now included but things like Pro Nav is still an option, which is why its worth checking what the current standard spec for his car is.

In fact here is the current standard spec for the 4 series Gran Coupe - https://www.bmw.co.uk/pdfs/standard-specifications/bmw_4series_grancoupe_standardspec_august2018.pdf

That's all you are required to do.

That confirms what said - pro nav is standard on m sport models and Dakota leather is standard across all 4 series models.

I’m that respect they haven’t changed.

So I wasn't wrong as you claimed.

Yes, I'm afraid you were. You claimed that glass is tinted to the maximum as standard, which obviously isn't the case if manufacturer's can offer options as the one I just posted.
