Most likely its held in the stores systems somewhere and will get there within a day or two.
Second most likely its been temporarily lost and will be picked up on a routine automated audit in a few days.
Third most likely by a long way, its actually been lost.

Many many years ago, in the days of those paper swipe machines used for credit cards, when all the paper was then shipped back to head office for processing, a major department store along the lines of a Debenhams type size, in either Southampton or Portsmouth, I forget which, caught fire on a Saturday night and the accounts office was destroyed taking all the payments slips with it.

The store requested that people who had paid by credit card on the Saturday went in to tell them what they spent as they had no record of it. I suspect no one was trampled in the rush :D

I have a payment that hasn't been processed yet from about 2 years ago from those old card swipe machines. The shop's electronic system went down so they rummaged through the store room to find the old kit. They got talked through it on the phone by someone from the bank/card processor and got given an authorisation code but it never appeared on my bill. I suspect they then forgot to do whatever they needed to do to complete the transaction but I still keep half expecting to see it pop up on a credit card statement.
