Spent money in store, not been debited.

  • I've had a transaction in a "large store" (Aldi or Lidl) not show for nearly 3 months, but it showed eventually, don't spend the money . . .

I often have chip and pin debits not show as pending for a few days, I don't let it bother me.
  • I don't understand the issue here at all. OP made a transaction and it hasn't yet cleared so the money hasn't been taken out of the account. This only happened yesterday and clearing of transactions often has a short delay.

People always seem to expect a transaction to show as 'pending' and be deducted from their available balance immediately - why?

A transaction will only show as 'pending' if the retailer's POS device communicated through the 'ether' with the cardholder's bank at the time of the transaction. If no communication was made (either due to the transaction amount being below the Floor Limit, or a communication failure in the pipeline) then the transaction will not show as pending.

It's probably cleared by now - but, if not, you'll just have to wait.
  • I had a Tesco transaction for about £7 back in 2016 never show up even after three months, and never appeared in the pending transactions list on my Halifax account.

It can take months for some payments to go through ...

The transaction will be stored somewhere and it'll be somebody's job to get it onto the system for processing at some point.

So don't spend it .... after six years you're probably safe ... but I'd feel safe after six months, so, say, 1 May.

    Hi,

As others have said it will show up in time, sometimes the connection between the bank and the retailer is not online so its not processed in real time, but will do so when the banking procedure is applied.

Just keep the money aside either in your head or on a budget app or paper form so you know what you have available to spend not what is currently showing.

I await the its been taken update in due course.

I have had this a couple of times - usually all payments (contactless or chip and pin) show in my pending transactions almost immediately. But there have been cases where it takes a few days - that's normal. I wouldn't worry, it'll be debited in the end!

I think because we've got used to most of them being instant or same-day now. We've forgotten you used to have to wait days for things to show up, or for cheques to clear, and for inter-bank payments to go through. It's a surprise now when this doesn't happen instantly.

I expect along with that we have mostly lost the art of keeping track in our heads/on paper of what you have to spend as available balance less transactions you know you've made. It's too easy now to just glance at the available balance and assume that's what you have because you trust it will be up-to-the-minute. We need to remember this is not always accurate.

OP, it absolutely will go through eventually, maybe months down the line, so since this is a debit transaction it will be down to you to remember to keep enough in your account to cover it so you don't go overdrawn when it suddenly goes through. If you forget, have a zero balance and it goes through and sends you overdrawn that will be your responsibility unfortunately. It is a pain but this is how things used to be!

There are rules in place that dictate how long a retailer and his bankers are allowed to process a card-based transaction. Once again, please excuse my out of date knowledge but it used to be 30 days. Once that time had passed the issuer could invoke a 'Late Presentment' Chargeback but ONLY if there has been an attempt to honour the payment and this has failed due to the account being in a 'collections' or bad debt status.

This rule was tweaked at some point to additionally allow a Chargeback if the transaction was over 180 days old regardless of the account status.

Does anyone out there have more up to date knowledge on this aspect?
