Universal Credit I will get less money

I have been on the Universal credit calculator and found out that once they roll in out in my town I will be getting £120 less each month , I get full housing benefit at the moment for my house but when filling in the form for calculations as I have 2 x spare bedrooms I will have to pay for them on U.C. it seems unfair that as the housing couldnt find a smaller adapted home for me in my town ,they have put lots of adaptions into my house but once im on U.C. I will have to pay the extra yet never did before for my housing society house ,does anyone know if this is correct ,it will be eating into my ESA and PIP cash and I will have to cut down on food and energy bills just to pay the extra rent .

  • If you are talking about managed migration to UC which starts next November then we don't yet know exactly what the transitional arrangements will be.
  • The UC rules and HB rules are the same for housing element. If you have two spare rooms now and are a social renter then you should already be paying the spare room subsidy (bedroom tax).

If you are getting a discretionary housing payment to cover the spare room subsidy then you could also get it on UC.
  • As my housing society was the only one in the UK who never had to pay bedroom tax due to not being a registered provider we never had to pay this so its a lot of cash to now have to find .

  • I just went on the calculator which is supposed to let you know how much you will be getting so they must know to have provided it Id have thought.

And someone on PIP may be able to claim some exemption from a spare room deduction being applied. I.e. They might deduct for one spare room, rather than for two spare rooms. You just need to ask UC and explain use of one spare room. E.g. Family/carer staying with you overnight to assist your or storage of equipment that helps with a disability

And remember that you might be able to apply to your council for discretionary housing allowance as a top up to any UC Housing amount.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Is this some special kind of housing.

There are some kinds of housing which remain outside of Universal Credit and for which the claimant would continue to claim housing.

Your best option is to speak to your landlord and find out whether you are living in one of the exempt housing categories.

I don’t think the 'bedroom tax’ rules have changed. if you have an exemption now I see no reason for that to change under UC. The online calculators cannot pick up every situation - they should be treated as a guide.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Legacy benefits are paid 2 or 4 weekly where as UC is paid monthly. Make sure you take this into account when calculating if you're better or worse off. When i was comparing old benefits to new benefits, i worked out how much i get over a year and worked back from there.
  • Thank you I will look into that ,I was only exempt as all my housing landlord tenants were exempt due to how our landlord did not have to register as a housing provider but was also not a private landlord ,we were the only ones in the uk , if I had been able to get a small bungalow in my area I would have moved but as none came up I had to stay here after my famiy left home so my landlord put in many adaptations and also gave me permission to add shower etc.
