England Claim Services

I was called today by Eric Johnson, who had a strong Indian Accent, and told me that I have £1826.40 awaiting as a PPI reimbursement. he said the company he worked for were related to the Government and that his government ID was EJ786.
He advised me that 40% of this refund will be kept by the organisation.
This all sounded quite strange, however he then informed me that due to a change in the law, I will have no access to the funds if I do not take out a Tax Free investment, i.e. mortgage, car loan or life insurance policy, during this financial year. he spent the rest of the call trying to convince me to take out a life insurance policy.
I asked him that I hadn't heard of this sort of set up and so he'll call me back tomorrow, maybe. His number was 01506 419 059.
Am I right to be sceptical?

    Sceptical doesn't come close.

You'd be clinically insane if you believed a word of it.

You don't sound sceptical enough at all I'm afraid.

In future, you should ignore all such cold calls and certainly never take any notice of "government ID" or of the (false) telephone number which appeared in your Caller Display.

If you don't ignore such calls, you will find yourself with useless "life insurance" or (more likely) robbed of significant sums of money.

If you do have a PPI complaint, you should write direct to the financial institution concerned. There is no PPI refund made automatically to you and your financial details are not in the public domain.

All the hallmarks of a very common scam.

1 - Claims he works for the Govt (thats a lie and the number is made up)
2 - English name but foreign accent
3 - CMC rules prevent 40% being taken.
4 - being told you have to take out another product is fraud.
5 - Tell you there is money despite you never making a complaint or signing anything for your complaint to be investigated. Banks/firms reply to you directly. Not via third parties.

it is so obviously a scam and one that happens often.

The telephone number is also on the BT protect list (if you had that enabled, it would block the call). It is also noted as a scam on various who calls websites.
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.
  • He called back today and started his pitch again and I deliberately made up loads of lies. For example he asked if I smoke and I said no yesterday and he said that he hasn't smoked since he was young but today I said I do smoke and he said so does he, but his friends are trying to convince him to give up.
So his responses changed but led to the same outcome of trying to sell me a life insurance policy.
I eventually told him not to waste my time.
  • Hi
I just had a call from one of these guys from England Claim Services about a PPI Calim called Tony (but with an Indian acccent). The actual number is witheld of course & a number given is 0161 464 3145.
Clearly a scam of some sort. Won't be accepting another call from them.
  • I too just had a call from them, from the number 01978 823878. Very odd phone call and no sign of a website for 'England Claims Services' either. I didn't like the way they asked me to confirm my name before pausing and asking me to confirm it again.

Realise that you don't have to give any personal information to cold callers, nor do you need to confirm your identity. They are calling you without permission, so you don't owe them even courtesy.

Realise also that any telephone number which appears in your Caller Display will falsely indicate that the call originates in the UK rather than abroad.

The simple solution is to just put the 'phone down and forget about it.

If they ask you to confirm your name, just make one up. If they ask for it a second time, give a different one.

You don't owe a cold caller any courtesy at all and, as said already, you should definitely not give a cold caller any valid information about yourself.
  • Exactly the same thing happened to me and I was told I was entitled to exactly the same amount - 1826.40. When I started questioning him and questioned the bank this money was meant to be from he hung up on me... scammers.
