I often go straight to the bad reviews to see what problems people are having and if I could tolerate those issues for the utility of what ever it is.

Positive reviews often don’t tell you about usability problems or restrictions. People don’t research things unless they are having a problem & it’s often too late by then to unwind the purchase.

Companies have gotten wise to bad press and make it hard to directly link to detail in their documents and by shielding elements of web pages from search engines so searches of particular phrases don’t appear in google, just their own positive marketing headlines.

Another problem with positive reviews for many things is that they tend to be given too soon, when something is new and shiny and looks nice, and before it's had a chance to go wrong.
