I'm having to complete a voluntary tax disclosure for a couple of years on rental income.
Has anyone experience of completing it?
I'm ok with the basics of why I'm doing it and how much etc.
But when it comes to filling in the online form it not only asks how much I owe (ok) and what tax rate amount (ok), but it also asks the interest rate and penalty percentage.
Now you would think they would inflict that. It's like being in court and suggesting to the judge the fine/sentence.
There does exist an HMRC calculator that apparently sorts it. But it's only available on Windows.
Any suggestions please? I have also tried contacting HMRC direct but by phone is impossible and I have gone online as well to them.

The HMRC calculator is an adobe file.
It works on MacOS. Make sure you right click, open-with Acrobat Reader rather than the default (probably Preview).
Phone 8am if you need to.0 -
Have had to do this (for someone else) - didn't find any calculator but did it all myself on a spreadsheet. Not an easy or intuitive process!0

Many thanks for the responses.
I have downloaded the Adobe file but it won't Ioad on an Android device.
And regarding the calculations, I'd have no problem struggling with the figures (to a degree), but fundamentally how am I supposed to know the interest rate and penalty?
Surely only the HMRC know that. Additionally I understand that the penalty depends on level of guilt (no of years, deliberate etc.)

Just out of interest this is the error message.
If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF

The methodology for calculating penalties is here ..
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/compliance-checks-penalties-for-failure-to-notify-ccfs11 and here ...
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/compliance-checks-penalties-for-inaccuracies-in-returns-or-documents-ccfs7a
Interest here...
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/rates-and-allowances-hmrc-interest-rates-for-late-and-early-payments/rates-and-allowances-hmrc-interest-rates
However it is not simple and if you get it wrong they will reject you disclosure.
That error message indicates that the PDF is not being opened in Adobe Reader or the Adobe Reader version is not compatible with the document.0 -
Will give them a try. Meanwhile HMRC have got back and provided the dedicated phone number.
So will try your links first then phone.
Many thanks.0 -
As a courtesy for helping me out and for any other readers an update.
Those forms were useful and complicated as you say. Having to choose a penalty level my self was wierd. But well worth reading to give an overview of everything involved.
So I rang them.
They were very helpful and good attitude.
To sum up.... I have to wait for next level of communication from them and then the 90 days starts.
When I complete the online form eventually I do indeed select the penalty percentage! So obviously you choose the lowest. Which you probably won't get away with if the non payment has been deliberate
He completely sold me on using the calculator, so I will probably use a library screen.
So to anyone else reading this........ Ring them 0300 322 7012
I haven't become an expert but at least it all looks less daunting.0
