Cash in Euros and Dollars - best way to get into a UK bank account?

Hi all,

Me and my wife received 4 figure sums in both Euros and Dollars for our wedding in Ukraine last month. We are both extremely grateful for this and as we are coming back to the UK next month to live (she will probably be a bit later, as her visa hasn’t been processed yet), we want to conver the money to GBP.

I have been trying to look into Euro and Dollar accounts, but it falls down as a lot of them don’t accept cash deposits (such as revolut, which I already use regularly). I imagine there must be a cheaper way than just finding the cheapest travel agent - does anybody have any ideas?

I wanted to try and find a way to deposit the cash into a Euro/dollar account in the UK, and then move that money to revolut or a similar service, then spend it fee-free (like with Revolut).

Thanks in advance!!

I would suggest (i) seeing what exchange rates are offered by money-changes in the Ukraine; (ii) see if any banks there offer Euro and Dollar accounts and accept cash deposits.

Thanks for this! This is absolutely perfect if I don’t find a better way (basically using Revolut to convert, but for that I need a EUR/USD account to even make the transfer in the first place).

And there you have the problem. It is generally not possible to deposit cash into Euro or Dollar accounts based in the UK. You could obviously open cash-receiving Euro accounts: there is some discussion on this board about a German bank that gives accounts to British people and Ireland might also be possible. I cannot think of a solution for the dollars.

I'm just wondering if you could persuade someone to buy the cash off you for sterling?

Maybe someone 'foreign' or someone who travels abroad regularly perhaps?
