HI All! First post here, have been lurking around for a while though!

I am looking at buying my first property some time in the next few months having finnaly built up enough of a deposit to buy a home.

My question is for those of you out there with opinions of where in greater manchester i would be best buying my first house?

My budget is £150k and can go higher if needed, i would ideally like to be within 30mins of manchester picadilly.

Only asking for help as i dont know the area too well and was seeking advise from people who do! :)

What are you hoping for with your £150k?
30 mins of manchester driving in rush hour or 30 minutes by train?

There is a place called Edgeley in Stockport which I think is a sound investment at the minute as they are due to spend a small fortune on Stockport town centre over the next few years. That is maybe 15 minutes from town on a train and they are every 10-15 minutes or so.

Is there anything in particular you are looking for? House/flat/garden/bars/shops...

  • There are alot of areas around Manchester which are good for different reasons. What are you looking for in your property in regards to size, style, amenities in the area etc?
  • Where will you be working? Do you drive or will you be relying on the trains/trams/buses?
  • Thanks all!

I work in Piccadilly gardens area and ideally it would be 30mins on train to that area.

for 150k i would like a minimum of a 2 bed house...i dont particularly want to live in a terrace and i am open to flats but would MUCH prefer a house with parking.

i will look at edgley thanks for the recommendation!
  • I have lived in quite a few areas in Manchester, your best driving around to get a feel of the different areas. Some nice areas to look out for are Cheadle, Sale, Didsbury, Heaton Moor all within 30 minutes of the city centre with good transport links however they can be pricey and your best checking where in that area the property is as the good areas aren't too far from the bad areas.

With a radius of 30 minutes on train or tram you open up a lot of options!

So what sort of area do you want to be in? Suburban with good schools and neighbours who wash their cars on a Sunday? Urban where you can walk to the city centre bars and shops? More rural or villagey where you can get up on the hills easily?

I would say for a house, Edgeley but you might be looking at a terrace/end terrace.
    For a flat/Apartment Heaton Mersey/Heaton Moor.

30 minutes on train opens up areas like newton-le-willows / Warrington etc so id consider what you want for the area and go from there.

...which is worth scoping on matchday/night just to ensure it isn't too rowdy.

What sort of area do you want? Rural or village or do you want more going on?

The Bromley Cross and Edgley areas of Bolton are nice, quite rural and countryfide and about 30 minutes by train. Terrace houses common.

Eccles in Salford is up and coming, lots of investment and likely to go in value, it's close enough to Monton for nice restaurants and bars (Monton is out of you price range). Terraces common, if you go towards the hospital end, just off Lancaster road you get more 1930s semis but there's less around in terms of cafes etc. Trams and trains in to Manchester in about 15 minutes.

Prestwich - you may just get a 2 bed there, but it'll be a terrace or ex-council. Has got up in popularity in recent years, lots going on. Tram to town in 15 minutes.

Urmston - might just get a 2 bed, but again going to be a terrace, nice bars and restaurants bit of a town feel. Train to town in 15 minutes

Further out gets cheaper but then you lose some of the Manchesterness!
