Chest freezer not working- what’s my rights??

Any advice appreciated, I bought a Russell Hobbs chest freezer in April 2017 from Tesco, The 1 year tesco warranty has expired, the freezer has stopped working, I have contacted Russell Hobbs giving my warranty number but they have came back and said that my warranty is not active since I didn’t register the product within the 28 days from purchase. Even though I have an email from Russell Hobbs saying ‘congratulations you have successfully registered your product’ and gives an Expiry Date of 10/04/2022.
It was after 28 days that I registered the product online but I didn’t know that I had to register it within a certain time frame. Surely an appliance should work longer than a year and few months. What is my rights here for this situation?
Many thanks

A warranty is over and above your consumer 'rights' so if you haven't adhered the T&Cs of the manufacturer's warranty and they won't honour then you have nowhere to go with that.

You do however have consumer rights with the retailer but as it is over 6 months from purchase the onus is on you to prove there is an inherent fault with the freezer. You can do this by getting in independent report stating the fault is inherent (has been there since purchase although has only just happened). Once you have this report you can go to the retailer who if they accept it can then repair, replace or refund (their choice, not yours). Any refund can be reduced to take account of the 18 months use you have had from it.

Does the warranty indeed state it needs to be done within 28 days? Legally, no warranty needs to be offered by if it is, its legally binding on the party offering it.

If the warranty did have such a term at the time you registered (it wouldn't count if its a term they've added after the fact) then you'd need to approach the retailer and make a claim under the consumer rights act. Although be aware that after 6 months, the onus is on you to prove the lack of conformity is inherent (for example it wasn't caused by physical damage or misuse). This is usually done via independent report, if the report finds in your favour then the retailer are liable for the cost of the report.

But speak to tesco first and see what they say. Retailers don't always require reports so no point incurring expense unless its required.
