Fault with Laptop outside warranty period

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 900 laptop from John Lewis in February 2016. I've been looking after it well, however, a few days ago when I tried to switch it on the screen started flickering and It's become impossible to log in and use it.
I've spoken to a few clued up friends and they reckon it's most likely a hardware problem (have been given a variety of possible causes).
Today I phoned John Lewis's customer service line but was told as it is more that two years after the purchase date the warranty is no longer valid.
Is there anything else I can do to get this repaired?
I've read on the forum's consumer rights page that: "You have up to six years after you bought a good to complain"
I'll be really grateful for any pointers.

After 6 months, under consumer regulations, you have to prove that that fault is inherent, i.e. it was present when you bought the item. To do this you will need to get the item independatly inspected and get a report.0

Thanks for the advice. Where do I get and independent report from? Would my local computer repair shop be the right place to go for this?0

Yes it would, and they will probably charge for this service, getting 2 yrs out of a laptop without any issues is good going. There are 3 things i would look at 1st
a. heat are the fans still spinning and cooling the machine
b. the graphics card
c. the cable from lid to motherboard located by the hinge
probably easier to buy a new one0 -

Easier maybe - but this is a moneysaving website.
I would at least get a professional opinion.
I would say £30 max at your local computer store (NOT currys/PC world) for them to tell you what is wrong with it0 -
Bear in mind that the report must state (on the balance of probabilities) that the fault was inherent. (Present at the time of purchase, but not apparent). The seller is liable for refunding the (reasonable - up to maybe £50 or so) cost of the report if it finds an inherent fault, as well as providing a remedy (Repair, Replace, Refund - likely partial to account for usage).0

I'm typing this on a 10+ year old HP laptop which I have had from new and it's never had any problems.
My laptop in the UK is a Toshiba and is now 5 years old and hasn't ever had a problem (apart from software relates ones).
At work I have a Dell which is 4 years old and gets carried to and from work on a daily basis and again, never had a problem.
If you have experienced so many problems with laptops then it's more likely that it's down to something you are doing rather than a problem with laptops in general.0 -
My laptop at home is almost 6 years old and still runs fine. (I'm about to fit an SSD to perk it up a bit, but it's not essential).0

Try writing to Heed Office first, quoting the consumer legislation and stating that it would be reasonable to expect an item of that cost to be last more than two years.
They might just agree to repair it.0 -
I bought a MacBook Pro from Amazon which had a one year guarantee. 2 months after the guarantee ran out, the SSD broke. I wrote to Amazon and quoted the consumer law and they took my broken laptop back and gave me a full refund. I paid for fast delivery too when I bought it and that payment was also refunded to me
Apple has some info on their website about consumer law too. I tried to post a link to some info but I'm not allowed... being a newbie0
