How on earth did this ever fit together?

So, I got a friend at work to bring in a small handheld rotary machine that has hundreds of different attachments to do all sorts of things, plus a small hacksaw to try to cut through most of the 'other end' of the pipe as advised - but before I could do so, my GF called to say that she felt guilty I'd spent so much time trying to fix it, and had called a plumber to come. He only charged £60, so not much at all. Unfortunately I wasn't home, so I don't know exactly what he did, but I do know that he used a new shower arm with a thread on it, so whether he removed the compression fitting from the wall altogether, or somehow used an adaptor so it could take the threaded pipe, or even chopped the thread off the threaded pipe to use it in the compression fitting, I've no idea, and he'd replaced the tile and filled the hole by the time I got home, so I can't easily tell what he did, which is a little frustrating.
However we now have a working shower again, no leaks, and I've learned a lot from the advice given on here (especially EachPenny - your thoughtfully put together and well-explained posts have been really useful and interesting to me, so thanks for taking the time).
Thanks to everyone on here.
