There are some reasonably priced houses and apartments here in Birmingham - in fact the city centre itself is overflowing with empty up-market apartments because people have had their homes re-possessed, thus these homes are becoming cheaper.

I live in an area that used to be quite prosperous until the Rover works shut down but now the area is being regenerated and I live in a rented 3 bedroom flat and pay £525 per month, I am close to a railway station that takes you straight into Birmingham City Centre then I can hop on a train to London.

I think it should be incredibly obvious which ones to avoid, unless you enjoy the latest bass sounds vibrating your floors, gunshots at 2am waking you up, fried chicken shops every 40 yards and the soothing sound of teeth being kissed.

You really are a prize plum, and not very funny.

Titania, have you thought about Market Weighton? Should get a lot for your money, and between York and Hull, but in the country. Lovely little town, if that is your sort of thing.

    I'd buy this place.

Market Weighton is very pretty, I agree.

Only 2 beds and no garden, but you don't need one in this village.

From memory there is a pub with a mini-brewery, a church, no shop, and a weekly bus service. But you did ask for a nice area, and this is it.

Edit. Looking at the map, I think you are next to the pub and across the road from the church, where a distant uncle of mine who played cricket for Yorkshire is buried.

Spooky...was reading this thinking WEYMOUTH!! then saw last post...I fell in love with Weymouth a couple of yrs back...would love to go there but my business would totally die there (am Brighton based).I'm sure there were good places around £150k just outside town. Beach is wow and you could get into boats and fishing and stuff when you have some spare ££ and time.....def worth a trip!!

Find an area you like the look off then knock on a few doors asking what the area is like. If they open them on the chain or point a shotgun after you, it's probably not a good area.

No, seriously, just knock on a few doors. In nice areas people will talk to you.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I'll third Lincolnshire too! I moved here from the Guildford area seven years ago, and it has been bliss to escape the M25 and the rat race.

There are several large villages around Spalding which offer quite a lot, as does Spalding itself although like most towns, there is a 'rougher' end. Long Sutton (close to the Norfolk border) is a lovely small town. Bourne seems to get good reports too.

To get home to Mum, I drive (35 minutes) into Peterborough, get the train and I'm there in a little under two hours = total journey time approx 3 hours, travelling comfortably. Late at night, I have done the entire journey of 150 miles by road (via A1 and M25) in a little over two hours, but didn't get caught speeding on that occasion!

I think the suggestion to rent somewhere is a good one. Not too difficult to escape if things don't work out for you. Good luck.
  • Thanks everyone for all the ideas and info. Still being swayed by the French properties but who knows. Will let you know what happens and once again thank you all for you help. x
