How do I find a 'nice' area?

What do you intend to do about working after you move? Surely it would be easier to consider an area where you can find a job easily.0

Generali - that place in Gascony is to die for - it would be absolututely perfect! Will try and do some convincing on the sister as I love it.
Pinkshoes - you've brought a smile to my face for the first time in weeks about Wisbech - wondered what the catch was LOL
Will have a look at some of the areas suggested on here as not having much luck with a basic Google of requirements.
I only have £40k on the mortgage but have incredibly huge credit card bills and am finding repayments of everything increasingly difficult. My income has dropped considerably as I have been caring for my parents (who have now passed away) and I really want all the debt gone so I can have a fresh start (and not make the same stupid money mistakes again).
I hadn't considered renting because of my dogs but suppose it's a possibility I should consider.0 -
tr3mor I work from home at the moment and so long as I have an internet connection should be OK. If I can find a house for the right price I would not have a mortgage to pay, the credit cards would be clear so the income I make at the moment should hopefully be more than sufficient. (Tho saying that any extra is always appreciated)! My sister can't contribute to the house cost but can contribute to the living expenses so that will be a small saving too for utilities, phone etc.0

Wisbech, I have a friend living there and they love it having lived in Milton Keynes basically all their lives. It's each to their own really isn't it
Saying that though, loving that Gascony property!0 -
I've got to admit that the concept of choosing where to permanently settle based on whether you can afford a house seems a odd logic choice(especially when you are talking about spending £150k). Would renting in teh short term not be better to get a feel for an area if you have no real ties to work etc. that would give you a lot more flexibility to 'try areas before you buy'0

A couple of people have suggested "up north". I have checked a 40 mile radius around York and I think you will struggle to get anything that is 3 bed, detached and less than £150k.
York is only a 2 hour direct train ride from London (some people commute daily) but I think it is outside the price range.
If you want any areas around York I can help.....

Could you post links to these so people have at least a vague idea of what you would find suitable?
Otherwise it's a needle in the haystack task.;)Trying to keep it simple...0 -
I live in Sheffield and love it up here - came for uni (from just outside London) and never left. I think you could get what you want in some areas but you'd probably struggle to tick all boxes - esp the detatched one in that price range! The city is really nice and I feel like I live in an aussie soap as we get on really well with the neighbours which is nice (terraced house with access through each other's gardens). Yes we do sometimes hear them through the walls but not loud enough to bother us! If you were prepared to consider a terrace you'd have lots to choose from.
If you any more specific advice about Sheffield feel free to PM me (see there really is one of us in every city!)

I grew up in a pretty part of East Yorkshire: plenty of houses like that in my old postcode:
