tip - look at stuff around £1000 and keep the rest for contingency, i.e. some repairs if required or increased insurance premiums. Plenty of decent sub-£1k out there, just be a bit picky....
For sub £1k, finding a good one amongst the lemons is difficult. But it's a risk of buying any car, even new ones. It's just the chances of ending up with a bad one increase as your usable budget goes down.
We'll see what she gets as a settlement. Autotrader valued the car at £6k as a trade in or £7k as a private sale. If she gets more back from the insurers, she can look at slightly newer and (in theory) better condition cars.0 -

You're almost an entertaining as the local inbreds on Facebook who commented on the news story. She wasn't taxed or insured, she must have run a red light, women drivers etc. It happened outside the A&E, so there was also the obvious (and therefore hilarious) comments about the ambulance not having far to go etc.
Luckily my Mom has a sense of humour. I've told her though. She needs a different hobby because Kerb crawling is too expensive!0 -

Her car got bumped twice earlier in the year, both incidents within a week. I don't think it showed as being any category of write off, but if it was then that will knock their value of payout.0 -
