Credit history needed for an amex card

Generally speaking, if someone has a no credit history as they've never had a loan, credit card, mortgage etc, how many months of credit history would amex like to see before giving you a card like Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card?

Of course assuming you've never missed a payment since having your first credit card and have been spending responsibly etc.

I use their eligibility checker and it says I'm very likely to get accepted but this definitely isn't true as I only have 1 month of credit history and Experian is basing my eligibility purely on my credit score which isn't important, it's credit history that matters.

So roughly how many months of credit history are needed? 6 months? 12 months? Thanks.

How do you know that "this definitely isn't true"? Have you applied for a card and been declined?

Why don't you apply and find out?

From my experience I had a Capital One for 6 months then got a Barclaycard initial (upgraded after 4/5 months to Amex/Visa dual (now discontinued)) then a month later got an Amex Rewards Gold (its now silver/blue) with the £50 voucher if you spend £1k.

So all in a 1 year from no credit history to an Amex Card

Though I would with careful planning always paying in full, no cash advances, etc... to ensure a good report and for 2 years prior I had EE/Tmobile and VIrgin Media in good standing on the account. And Electoral Role for 2 years.
  • Have you used the eligibility checker on AMEX website rather than a third party one?

On third party eligibility checkers the amex cards don't show up, the ones that do show up I get not eligible except for vanquis or capital one.

Because 1 month of credit history is simply not enough to get accepted for a from amex, even capital one only gave me a credit builder card with a £200 limit. I don't want to apply and get rejected because it will damage my future chances.
  • If you’re only getting £200 from Cap One then I don’t think you have much chance.

They will also look at income as well as a deciding factor
  • Fiance just got her first credit card which was the Gold Amex. The limit is £1,500.

If you are thinking of 6 or 12 months, then you could apply and if you get rejected, try in 12 months when the application has fallen off :p. One hard search isn't a problem so you go for a vanquis/cap one and use that for the 12 months and build your credit history .... simples

I already have the capital one credit builder card and was planning on using this for 6 months to build credit before applying for an amex card but I wanted to know if 6 months was enough of a credit history to qualify for an amex card.

And this was with no credit history?
  • Depends. Lenders have their own criteria that no one is privvy to.

    You’ll only know by applying
  • You simply don't know until you apply. Given their eligibility checker says you have a good chance, I would say go for it.

I do all the spending I can on the Amex Platimum Cashback card. It's great.
